0% capital gains under "big beautiful bill"

Featured Replies

My phone suggested the following piece by CNBC and it has confused me because I don't see any change for the 0% capital gains rates from this bill. The bill has a few tax changes like no tax on tips, no tax on overtime and a larger deduction for seniors but the 0% capital gains seems to be the same as in 2024,  I have been doing gain harvesting for a few years and would like to be aware of any changes to the  0% capital gains limits. Is there a change to the 0% capital gains that I am missing?

If your other income is not over the  standard deduction, you will enjoy 0% tax on $48350 of CG in 2025.

It was $47025 in 2024.

If your taxable income ( after standard deduction) is $x, the tax free CG is $48350 less $x. All your CG is taxable if $x is over $48350.

There is a worksheet in the 1040 instruction on how to calculate Qualified Div and CG tax without knowing the rules behind it.

Thanks for this but I am still not clear how the new bill has changed anything to do with capital gains?

The standard deduction and the amount of the CG has increased in 2025 but other than that it seems to be unchanged by the big-beautiful-bill.

Thanks for the feedback.
