Police Sergeant With Prosthetic Leg Reinstated After Uproar

A brave police sergeant from Chon Buri defies the odds, regaining his promotion after a prosthetic leg rejection sparks a change in attitude towards disabilities.

Following a road accident in 2021 that resulted in the amputation of his leg, Pol Sgt Thanawat Panyalertsattha, an enquiry officer at Bang Bung district office, faced a challenging journey. Despite wearing a prosthetic leg, Thanawat achieved top scores in a Royal Thai Police exam for promotion and excelled in physical tests, including running and swimming.

Initially, the exam committee turned him down due to a rule against “supporting tools or equipment”—his prosthetic leg being the reason.

The decision drew nationwide attention and sympathy, highlighted on social media, and prompted the Royal Thai Police to reassess the outcome. This week, Pol Gen Kitrat Phanphet, the national police chief, ordered Thanawat's reinstatement to the promotion list.

In a grateful response, Thanawat thanked the police chief for what he views as a victory, not only for himself but also as a shift towards more inclusive attitudes to disabilities in Thailand, reported THai PBS World.

He highlighted the continued struggles of other police officers who face similar challenges and urged them to advocate for their right to equal treatment.

Through this decision, the Royal Thai Police have set a precedent, encouraging a view of capability beyond physical limitations and prompting further dialogue about workplace inclusivity and equal opportunity for all officers.
