Study Links Fossil Fuel Giants to Deadly Global Heat Waves

For the first time, scientists have directly linked worsening global heat waves to emissions from specific fossil fuel and cement companies, raising the possibility of sweeping legal consequences.

Published in Nature, the study examined 213 major heat waves worldwide between 2000 and 2023. Researchers found that climate change—driven largely by fossil fuel burning—has made extreme heat events up to 200 times more likely compared to the pre-industrial era. The analysis also quantified how much the world’s biggest polluters, known as “carbon majors,” have intensified heat waves.

According to lead author Yann Quilcaille of ETH Zurich, the top 14 carbon majors alone are responsible for nearly half of the increased heat wave intensity between 2010 and 2019. This includes major oil companies such as ExxonMobil and Chevron, as well as former large-scale fossil fuel producers like the Soviet Union. Even the smallest carbon majors were found to have contributed to extreme heat events that otherwise would not have occurred.

The study estimates that climate change increased the median heat wave intensity by 3.02°F (1.68°C) over the past decade, with 0.85°F (0.47°C) attributable to the top 14 carbon majors. A further 0.68°F (0.38°C) was linked to another 166 companies.

Scientists warn that the findings may still undercount impacts in regions such as Africa and South America, where extreme heat is often poorly recorded. Experts say the study represents a breakthrough in climate attribution science by tying specific disasters to individual corporate polluters.

Legal scholars involved in the research suggest the results could bolster climate lawsuits against fossil fuel producers by providing clearer evidence of causation. If courts accept these findings, oil and gas companies could face mounting pressure to pay for climate damages worldwide.

Key Takeaways:

  • New Nature study links 213 global heat waves directly to emissions from fossil fuel and cement producers.

  • Top 14 carbon majors responsible for nearly half of the increased intensity of heat waves since 2010.

  • Findings could strengthen climate lawsuits holding corporations accountable for damages.

Yes. Those of us who will be alive long enough to have to deal with the consequences are extremely concerned.

According to them (egg spurts)

we should have been dead multi times over already...but don't worry you will survive long enough to fight in WWIII   coming sooner than any MMCC  catastrophe 😝

The IPCC says 0.15c per decade. So one is lying.

Let me see....

We have university educated scientists, who have created peer-reviewed studies with documented evidence of the threat, that can be verified.

And then we have johng, an AseanNow conspiracist with his message "don't worry, it's all going to be fine"

It's really tough to decide who to believe...

Hundreds of scientists who are skeptics including me who came first in physics.

I didn't say its all going to be fine...you missed the bit about WWIII ????

You said we're all going to be fine regarding climate change.

I agree that WWIII may end up beating climate change to the punch. I agree it's something that most forum dwellers should be more concerned about.

But for those of us who are hoping to live for more than a couple of decades, climate change and WWIII are both as worrying as each other.

Climate change is 90% bs. Every educated person knows this. You have a bit of reading to do.

You could have just said "I haven't done one"

You could have said you have never researched the topic which is obvious

I have read over 100 reports. Its 90% bs.

It doesn't matter how many reports you look at if they're all a bunch of toss.

They both are liars. And the Journal Nature is not what it used to be, as it has been politicized in the last twenty years and gone to crap on any science where there’s a political interest and cannot be trusted on any of those issues.

As a believer you have a solar powered home, and drive an electric car, right?

Or is your belief all mouth?

No need to reply, we know the answer.

Not since WaPo screwed up and published this:

I rent a condo so solar isn't an option.

I don't have a car. My current motorbike uses gasoline, unfortunately. Next one may be electric if my finances allow for it.

I always turn the light off when I leave the room...

You are not educated enough to understand the laws of thermodynamics, which drive both climate change (first law0 and global warming ( second law).

I am nobody's pet scientist.
