The City Government of Davao has teamed up with two prominent fast food chains, McDonald's and Jollibee, to enhance employment opportunities for senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWD). On September 12, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was announced through a Facebook post, formalizing the collaboration aimed at implementing the Senior Citizens Job Opportunity Ordinance. The initiative promises to offer a combined total of nearly 200 job openings.

This agreement follows the longstanding goal of the Davao government to provide work opportunities for marginalized groups. Spearheaded by Councilor Diosdado Mahipus Jr., the ordinance encourages employment for senior citizens. The agreement with Golden Arches Development Corporation, the franchisee of McDonald's in the Philippines, was signed on September 9. It aims to make available approximately 110 jobs for seniors. Meanwhile, the Jollibee Group committed to offering 87 job openings, as per the agreement signed on September 11.

Acting Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte emphasized that these partnerships seek to fulfill the desire of many seniors to continue working despite their age. He expressed gratitude to the companies for their willingness to support and assist the city's senior and PWD communities. Mayor Duterte noted, "Every time pag pumupunta ako ng mga barangay…kadalasan diyan may mga senior citizen na lumalapit...kung may chance lang daw sila na magtrabaho, magtatrabaho talaga sila."

Lorenzo Borja, Head of the Office of Senior Citizen Affairs (OSCA), clarified that the program targets seniors who are both willing and able to work, prioritizing those without a stable source of income. In his remarks, he stressed that this initiative essentially serves as an important support mechanism for these communities.

Looking forward, Mayor Duterte hopes that more companies will follow the lead of McDonald's and Jollibee in providing "equal employment opportunities" for the citizens of Davao. He reiterated the government's obligation to care for its residents, especially the marginalized, stating, “This is a big deal and a big help to our senior citizens and PWDs.”
