My UOB bank account was scammed

Featured Replies

My UOB account was scammed yesterday. A transaction was approved by the bank despite no authorisation by OTP by me, and the amount was over the limit requiring OTP approval, which I think is THB1500. I immediately rang the bank and they blocked my debit card, and will refund me the amount "within 90 days". There may be an issue with OTP authorisations, and weirdly the ATM/Debit card was used by me at a UOB ATM machine yesterday, (one of the few times I actually use the card - for cash withdrawal), which makes me wonder whether the ATM machine is compromised*. All these sledgehammer to a walnut "preventative" measures being made by BOT amount to nothing.

I was alerted to the scam by an SMS from the bank, the content of which which made no sense**, but it provided a fraud number to call, and they took the measures aforementioned. What was also weird was as I was talking to the fraud officer, I mentioned that the transaction was not showing on my app, but the balance was less by the amount of the unauthorised withdrawal. She said that was because the transaction was "pending", so I asked if it could therefore stopped. It wasn't.

**You have spent THBXXXX.00 on your UOB card X-XXXX at Steam Purchase. If this is unauthorised, please call 02-285-1573, (which is indeed their fraud reporting number).

Never share OTP with anyone. Use SMS-OTP *********** for your purchase of THBXXXX.00 a STEAMGAMES.COM XXXXXXX expiring at [date] [time] BKK time (SMS 5 minutes before the time).

I would be more concerned that the SMS was fraud and trying to get you to call a number to be scammed.

Not so if he has SMS alert set up and gets an SMS for every transaction.

Otherwise,  if this was a one-time SMS, yes, you are right.

Not the first time that Steam comes up as a "place" where scammers love to spend money.

I was also scammed a couple years back with a Steam account. Do you have a Steam account yourself? Do you allow Steam to make deductions from your UOB account? If you do switch off that function immediately.

If you don't know, Steam is a huge computer game purchase platform.

Please get in touch with the Steam helpline. They will need to know the time and date of the an unauthorised transfer. They will then destroy the Steam account that stole from you and ban the user. This is well worth doing since the thief will lose access to all their computer games etc that they might have on the game platform.

They will also refund the money if your bank does not refund it. And they will provide the details of the end user of your money if you obtain from the Thai police a police report.

I do have an SMS alert for every UOB transaction, and every time I open their app.

I don't have a Steam account, neither do I allow deductions from my account. I did not know what it was apart from the obvious from their name "Steamgames.com". I was going to do as you suggest, but I have to provide them with information, including the last 4 digits of the card, my phone number etc.

If you don't use your debit card for online purchases very often, then just disable the function in the banking app. And if you do want to make an online purchase, you can enable it temporarily. This one simple setting will preclude all of this kind of fraud from ever happening.

Thanks for the tip.

I recently got an email from Wise.com asking if I wanted to assign a contact code reference on all of the written communications that they send me. If my code shows up on a text or email from them, then I know that it is legit. If no code is referenced, then I know that it's a scam. The Thai banks need to do the same thing.

Steam is an online video game platform.

Surely everyone knows that.

Thank you. I did contact the SteamGames.com Support, and provided details, with which they initially couldn't locate the transaction, but subsequently did. They said "it appears your credit [it's a debit] card information has been compromised"; they reversed the entry, and it will take a few weeks to refund, plus the additional few weeks for UOB to refund, so probably the 90 days suggested by the bank. I then informed the bank, and whether my action will speed up the process or not, remains to be seen.

All rather annoying and tedious, and doubtless not the last time, as we live in the capital of scamming.

Did Steam promise to close and ban the user? This is a considerable punishment in itself, possibly costing them thousands of dollars.

No...."additional action", whatever that means. I did ask, based on your previous comment. I'm actually not going to file a police report, because that is just more tedium I can live without. Luckily the cancelled UOB card was quickly replaced, within 3 days, so I hope it has a long and safe life.

Can you please advise whether you were able to identify the person who illegally used my card? If so, I presume you take steps to remove them from your gaming platforms, and, if it is a local person, I would also like to make a police incident report.
