September 17, 2025Sep 17 Popular Post Picture courtesy of ABC Following the host's controversial remarks about the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk, ABC has taken "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" off the air indefinitely. This decision came just hours after the head of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) suggested ABC's broadcast licence might be in jeopardy. Kimmel's remarks during his Monday night monologue linked Tyler Robinson, accused of Kirk's murder, to Donald Trump’s MAGA movement. Kimmel accused MAGA supporters of trying to distance themselves from Robinson, stating, "The MAGA Gang is desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them." His comments ignited backlash amidst the ongoing political tensions following Kirk's death at a Utah university. ABC, a Disney subsidiary, confirmed the show's indefinite cancellation, emphasising its gravity. Nexstar Media Group, which partners with ABC, echoed this sentiment, expressing strong objection to Kimmel's remarks. Hours earlier, FCC Chair Brendan Carr criticised the comments as "truly sick" and warned of possible repercussions for ABC and Disney. Carr stressed that ABC's licence involves a duty to serve the public interest and hinted that severe consequences might follow if the network does not take appropriate action. Nexstar, currently seeking FCC approval for a $6.2 billion merger with Tegna, decided to replace Kimmel's show in its affiliated markets. Andrew Alford, Nexstar’s broadcasting division president, stated that Kimmel's comments were inappropriate at a critical time in national discourse. The decision aims to foster a more constructive dialogue moving forward and maintain community values. Looking forward, the situation places Disney and ABC in a challenging position as they navigate the regulatory and public relations implications of the controversy. Under increasing scrutiny from the FCC, the future of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" remains uncertain. Key Takeaways: ABC has indefinitely pulled "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" due to Kimmel’s remarks about late activist Charlie Kirk. FCC Chair Brendan Carr criticised the remarks, warning of potential action against ABC's licence. Nexstar has preempted Kimmel's show in its ABC-affiliated markets amid ongoing tensions.
