Tropical Depression Nando could intensify into a super typhoon as it moves over the Philippine Sea, warns PAGASA. Currently, Nando is located 1,260 km east of Central Luzon, with winds of 55 km/h and gusts up to 70 km/h. It is projected to enhance the southwest monsoon, with potential storm alerts reaching the maximum level of Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 5.

Nando is advancing northwest at 15 km/h and is expected to affect Northern Luzon soon. According to PAGASA, Wind Signal No. 1 might begin in the area by September 20, with the highest alerts possible during its passage. The forecast indicates Nando could make landfall or graze the Babuyan Islands between September 21 and 22.

Heavy rainfall linked to the southwest monsoon is anticipated to hit Northern Luzon beginning Sunday. As Nando gains strength, possibly reaching super typhoon status by crossing Extreme Northern Luzon, gusty winds are anticipated across the Ilocos Region and beyond. PAGASA advises caution regarding the moderate to rough seas around Luzon, possibly escalating to wave heights of up to 14 meters near Extreme Northern Luzon.

Concurrently, Tropical Depression Mirasol has exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility, heading toward southern China. Last observed 395 km west of Calayan, Cagayan, Mirasol maintains winds of 55 km/h and gusts of 70 km/h. Although wind signals for Mirasol have been lifted, its effects persist, influencing the southwest monsoon and causing strong winds and moderate seas across several regions through September 20.

PAGASA continues to caution vessels against venturing into the sea due to hazardous conditions prompted by these weather systems.

Key Takeaways

  • Tropical Depression Nando may escalate to a super typhoon, possibly impacting Northern Luzon.
  • Heavy rains and gusty winds are expected, with maritime warnings in place.
  • Mirasol has exited the area but continues to reinforce monsoon conditions.
