Russian Colonel General Alexander Lapin, a senior commander in the early stages of the Ukraine war, has been dismissed from military service, according to Russian outlet RBC.

Lapin, 61, will transition to a civilian role as an aide to the head of Tatarstan, focusing on support for veterans and their families, local agency Tatar Inform reported.

During the Ukraine conflict, Lapin commanded Russia’s Central Military District and the “Centre” grouping of forces in 2022. His leadership drew public criticism from Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov after Russian troops withdrew from the Ukrainian town of Lyman.

Lapin was later appointed to lead the Leningrad Military District and commanded the “North” grouping operating in Ukraine and near its border. In August 2025, he was replaced by Colonel General Yevgeny Nikiforov.

Key Takeaways

  • Lapin dismissed: Veteran Russian commander removed from active military service at age 61.

  • New civilian role: Appointed aide to Tatarstan’s head, tasked with veteran affairs.

  • Controversial past: Faced criticism for battlefield setbacks during Ukraine war.
