Pezeshkian in 2025  9th President of Iran

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has vowed to keep Tehran within the landmark Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), stressing that recent clashes with Israel have strengthened unity between Iran and Gulf Arab states.

Speaking at a UN General Assembly event, Pezeshkian dismissed speculation that guarantees from China or Russia would determine Iran’s stance, insisting that Tehran’s decision was independent of foreign backing. “We are not going to leave the NPT, whether they help us or don’t help us,” he said, emphasizing that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei supports remaining in the treaty framework.

His remarks come just months after the “12-Day War,” in which Israel and the United States struck Iranian nuclear facilities without intervention from Beijing or Moscow. The attacks, according to Pezeshkian, have fostered a rare sense of cohesion between Tehran and its Gulf neighbors, many of whom share growing concerns about Israeli actions in the region.

Still, the president acknowledged mounting domestic pressure from hardline factions urging withdrawal from the NPT, particularly as Iran braces for the reimposition of “snapback” sanctions in the absence of progress in nuclear talks with Western powers. “There are certain groups who want us to trample upon all agreements,” he said, but maintained that both his government and the supreme leader are committed to upholding international frameworks.

Elected on a reformist platform in 2024, Pezeshkian has attempted to balance calls for engagement with the West against entrenched resistance at home. His latest comments suggest Tehran will continue to rely on diplomatic channels, even as it faces renewed sanctions and heightened tensions with Israel.

Key Takeaways

  • Staying in the NPT: Iran pledges to remain in the nuclear treaty despite internal dissent.
  • Gulf unity rises: Israeli strikes have pushed Tehran closer to Arab neighbors.
  • Sanctions ahead: Iran braces for renewed international pressure as talks stall.
