Lavrov warns any attack on Russia will face decisive response

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov issued a sharp warning at the United Nations General Assembly, declaring that any aggression against Russia will be met with a “decisive response.”

Lavrov dismissed speculation from NATO members that Moscow intends to expand its war beyond Ukraine, after recent reports of Russian jets entering Estonian airspace and drones tracked over Poland and Romania. He insisted Russia has “never had and does not have any such intentions” toward European borders.

The minister accused NATO and the European Union of fueling the conflict in Ukraine, saying they are “directly participating” in what he called a “real war” against Russia. His remarks follow months of stalled ceasefire talks between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, which last took place in Alaska in August. Since then, Russia has escalated strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.

While stressing that Moscow’s operations remain limited to Ukraine, Lavrov also defended Russia’s right to respond to security violations. He acknowledged concerns about drones crossing international borders but warned that any attempt to shoot down aircraft or objects over Russian territory would be considered a grave violation of sovereignty.

Lavrov’s speech underscores Moscow’s strategy of projecting both restraint and deterrence — denying plans to attack NATO countries while warning of severe retaliation if Russia is targeted. His comments reflect growing tensions between Russia and Western allies as the Ukraine war enters its fourth year, with both sides accusing the other of escalation.

Key Takeaways

  • Lavrov told the UN Russia does not plan to attack NATO or EU borders but will respond decisively to any aggression.
  • He accused NATO and the EU of waging a “real war” against Moscow by supporting Ukraine.
  • Russia warned that attempts to shoot down objects in its airspace would be treated as a major breach of sovereignty.

And what about if Russia attacks another country, the Ukraine for example?

Should that be met with a “decisive response.”?
