Vance Urges Russia to ‘Accept Reality’ in Ukraine War

Vice President JD Vance on Sunday called on Russia to “wake up and accept reality” in its ongoing war against Ukraine, stressing that peace is only possible if Moscow changes course.

“We want peace here,” Vance told Fox News. “We have been actively pursuing peace from the very beginning of the administration, but the Russians have got to wake up and accept reality here.”

His remarks followed President Donald Trump’s statement earlier in the week that Ukraine could win back its original borders, calling Russia a “paper tiger.” Trump said that with EU and NATO backing, Kyiv is now in a position to reclaim all occupied territories.

The president made those comments after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the UN General Assembly in New York. While Trump has previously floated the idea of Ukraine making territorial concessions, his latest stance marked a sharp shift toward full Ukrainian restoration.

Russia currently controls Crimea, annexed in 2014, as well as all of Luhansk and parts of Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson. The war, launched in February 2022, has inflicted staggering losses. The Center for Strategic and International Studies estimates over 250,000 Russian troops and between 60,000–100,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed. The UN reports more than 14,100 Ukrainian civilian deaths, while the Moscow Times has counted over 620 Russian civilian deaths.

Vance, citing the mounting toll, criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for refusing to meet with Trump and Zelensky. He warned Russia’s leadership must reconsider the cost of the war: “They don’t have a lot to show for it. How many more people are they willing to lose? How many more people are they willing to kill for very little, if any, gain?”

Key Takeaways:

  • VP JD Vance said Russia must “accept reality” to end the war.
  • Trump declared Ukraine can reclaim all its original territory.
  • War death toll exceeds 250,000 Russian soldiers and 100,000 Ukrainians.

I don't like the man but I don't envy his job of trying to sell Donald trumps position which could do a 180 by the time vance has made his statement
