Ukraine Seeks More US Arms Deals After $90B Pact

Ukraine is preparing to deepen its defense cooperation with the United States, with new agreements on arms deliveries, including long-range weapons, expected soon. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the upcoming deals will build on an existing $90 billion agreement finalized during his talks with President Donald Trump at the UN General Assembly.

Speaking in Kyiv, Zelenskiy did not disclose specifics but confirmed that a Ukrainian delegation will travel to the US in late September or early October for technical meetings to implement the weapons pact. Talks will also cover potential US purchases of Ukrainian drones.

Ukraine continues to rely heavily on its own long-range drone capabilities to strike Russian military and energy targets deep behind enemy lines. At the same time, Kyiv has boosted its air defense with the recent delivery of a US-made Patriot system from Israel and expects two more systems later this year.

Zelenskiy also addressed the growing regional threat of Russian drone incursions. On September 10, Ukraine intercepted the majority of 92 UAVs headed toward Poland, though 19 reached Polish airspace. He said Kyiv is working with international partners to share its expertise in countering large-scale drone attacks, dispatching consulting teams abroad while hosting foreign representatives to study its methods.

In addition, Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko will meet with US officials in October to discuss potential American-backed projects in Ukraine, part of a joint investment fund established earlier this year.

As Ukraine’s war with Russia grinds on, stronger US defense ties and cooperation on drone warfare signal Kyiv’s determination to modernize its military and strengthen international security partnerships.

Key Takeaways:

  • Ukraine pursuing new US arms deals, including long-range weapons, beyond $90B agreement.
  • Kyiv boosts air defense with Patriot systems and shares drone countermeasures with partners.
  • US and Ukraine also exploring joint investment projects to support Ukraine’s economy.
