UK ILR and the new evisa.

Featured Replies

Hello. I have a Thai friend who may have got himself into a problem. He has a long-term UK ILR residence permit in his passport. He has been in Thailand over a year now but wants to return to the UK and has just heard about the new requirement to link the ILR with an evisa. He's worried that it may cause a problem leaving Thailand or with UK Immigration if he's allowed to fly.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Is your friend referring to the new rules that were recently proposed and are subject to consultation, or the old rules regarding absences from the UK which l believe state that ILR is cancelled after an absence of two years.

Either way he should set up an evisa account if he doesn’t have one already.

He is correct he needs to link his passport stamp or biometric card. to the e visa system,  i am not sure about travelling, i suspect that an ILR stamp would still be valid, maybe ask Thai airways as this must happen daily

this should explain

Hi thanks for the reply. He's aware about losing ILR after 2 years. It's setting up the evisa that concerns him as you have to be in the UK to do so apparently.

If you have a physical immigration document

If you have a valid physical document that shows your immigration status, carry it with you when you travel.

Physical documents include a:

  • sticker or stamp (for example, your indefinite leave to remain sticker) in your passport
  • right of abode certificate of entitlement
  • Home Office travel document
