Thaksin sues DSI

The Civil Court has set December 17 to rule whether Thursday's lawsuit filed by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra demanding Bt1.5 billion in damages from the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) merits the judicial review.

In the plaintiff writ prepared by his lawyer Pichit Chuenban, Thaksin contends that DSI director general Sunai Manomaiudom has made a number of misleading statements designed to tarnish his reputation.

Sunai's remarks are in connection with the investigation into the alleged equity cover-up involving SC Asset Corporation, a listed company for property development.

Just another point on the extradition issue. Historically the UK has rejected requests from countries which do not provide for jury trials, a position which Thailand presently occupies. The international court is an exception to the position for obvious reasons.

Are you sure?

Sweden doesn't have jury trials - which I think is a good thing due to the inheritly flawed system that is - and I'm sure they could get people extradited from the UK if needed.

Can be done, although it would be sort of cubic.

Justice Minister says Mr Thaksin’s lawsuit against DSI Chief a psychological tool

Minister of Justice Charnchai Likitjitta (ชาญชัย ลิขิตจิตถะ) says he believes that the deposed prime minister’s 1.5 billion baht lawsuit filed against the director-general of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) was intended to create a psychological effect on the state government.

Ousted PM Thaksin Shinawatra has currently sued DSI Director-General Sunai Manomai-udom (สุนัย มโนมัยอุดม) on grounds of wrongly alleging him and his wife, Khunying Potjaman Shinawatra (พจมาน ชินวัตร), of concealing assets of the SC Asset Co.,Ltd. However, the minister says the DSI director-general is not concerned about the lawsuit against him as he is confident in his innocence.

Mr Charnchai says further that the government’s establishment of a committee to investigate the extra-judicial execution during the Thaksin administration will work efficiently. He also expresses his confidence that the committee will succeed in cooperating with all sides in the investigation of the case.

Unlike in the South African Truth and Reconciliation process I do not expect a succession of state paid killers and torturers to get up and confess to their activities and explain the chain of command. Shame really.

Life on the run: 'It's so hard to get a decent haircut'

Among the revelations about the Man City boss's life in the nation's capital is that he occupies his time shopping for handbags for his wife and two daughters and singing karaoke with a Thai pop singer called Lydia, who sometimes accompanies him on his shopping trips. "She is like another daughter to him," Mr Thaksin's son said. :o

HANKY-PANKY? NO, SHE'S MY GOLF BUDDY

Thai R & B queen sings, shops and golfs with ex-Thai PM

They're karaoke buddies, golf partners, and reportedly go on shopping trips together.

What's up between former Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra and Miss Sarunrat Visutthithada, Thailand's reigning queen of pop and R & B? Recently, they have been seen in each other's company too often, and that has set the grapevine buzzing.

The 20-year-old, better known as Lydia, is now the talk of the town.

She was mentioned in Mr Thaksin's biography, Thaksin, Where Are You? by Lieutenant Sunisa Lertpakawat, a reporter for Thailand's army-run TV Channel 5. According to local newspapers, one of the most talked about subjects of the book is Mr Thaksin's admission that he knows Miss Sarunrat, who was nominated favourite Thai artist at last year's MTV Asia Music Awards.

The 58-year-old was quoted in the book as saying that he likes singing with her. When the biography was released earlier this month, talk swirled around their relationship.

The news caused such a stir in Thailand that one website claimed that Mr Thaksin's lawyer, Mr Noppadol Pattama, issued a statement to Thai Rath newspaper that the two are 'very close' and so were their families, and claimed there was 'no hanky-panky' involved.

They were introduced by Mr Thaksin's son, Panthongtae, who told the biographer: 'She is like another daughter to him.'

Besides being Mr Thaksin's singing partner, Miss Sarunrat is apparently also his golfing companion. Mr Thaksin, who lives in self-imposed exile in London, flies her over for a round of golf.

Besides his only son Pathongtae, 27, MrThaksin has two daughters with his wife, Potjaman. His oldest daughter, Pintongtha, 25, is studying in London. Youngest daughter Paethongtan, 21, was the only family member who was in Thailand and could vote in last week's referendum on Thailand's new charter.

It has also been reported that Miss Sarunrat has been on shopping trips with Mr Thaksin. On one occasion, she was invited to Japan with Mr Thaksin and his son so she could shop for new outfits in the trendy Harajuku shopping district in Tokyo for her new album, Inside Out.

Miss Sarunrat also performed during Manchester City's pre-season game against Spain's Valencia. Manchester City is now owned by Mr Thaksin.

Going by the many websites and forums dedicated to her, Miss Sarunrat has a strong following in Thailand. She is also known as Dear Visutthithada.

But Miss Sarunrat is no country bumpkin who had a lucky break. She has lived in Bangkok all her life with her parents and two younger siblings, a brother and sister.

In her profile listed on My Space, the children were recently given a house. It is not known in which country the house is located.

She picked her own stage name, Lydia, because it means 'success' in Polish. Besides Thai, Miss Sarunrat speaks Spanish and English. In 2005, she was invited to participate and perform at a United Nations Youth Forum.

Miss Sarunrat attended the International School in Bangkok and graduated with a near-perfect grade point average of 3.9.

Even as a child, she dreamt of becoming a pop star. She had intensive vocal training since she was 5 and is also said to be able to play the flute, saxophone, drums and piano. She has released two albums so far.

In a May interview with Student Weekly, a sister publication of Bangkok Post, she revealed that she had been planning on returning to the US to do her bachelor's degree, but changed her mind. "I've decided to stay in Thailand for one more year," she said. "I've changed my mind again. My family is going to open a resort and a restaurant and pub."

"It's better to stay here and help them run the businesses. My two siblings are studying. They can't help that much."

LYDIA WHO?

* Twenty-year-old R & B singer shot to fame in 2005. Nominated Favourite Thai Artist - alongside Tata Young - at MTV Asia Music Awards last year.

* Speaks Thai, English and Spanish.

* Multi-talented singer plays flute, saxophone, drums, piano.

* Counts former Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra as close friend.

She's got more appealing body parts for the football fans than Pojaman and her wind tunnel hairdo. He excels at using people for his image, again. She did not give her future carreer much of a chance when she decided to side with a criminal, I guess financial compensation was more important as is usually the case in his entourage.

If he were in Thailand this could be seen to be more acceptable. However in the UK the practice of Mia noi is viewed in an entirely different lite. No doubt many would see it as trying to put a square peg in a round hole.

Are you sure about that Tony? :o

In a side-by-side comparison of similar posing shots with Potjaman... I think the ol' gal more than holds her own...

Have the Thaksinistas EVER won a defamation suit? When do they get charged with malicious lawsuiting that wastes the courts' time and taxpayer's costs???....

Criminal court acquits AEC chief from Pojaman’s lawsuit

BANGKOK -- The Criminal Court here Monday acquitted Assets Examination Committee (AEC) chief Nam Yimyaem and four other defendants of a Thai language daily newspaper from a defamation lawsuit filed by ousted prime minister’s wife Pojaman Shinawatra.

In her lawsuit, Pojaman, wife of deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, charged that Mr. Nam along with the company which is the owner of Thai Post newspaper and three senior executives of the newspaper for publishing an inaccurate article published in the newspaper on January 30, 2007.

The article focused on the land purchase scandal in Bangkok’s prime business area on Ratchadaphisek Road.

The court ruled that Mr. Nam in his position as AEC chief told journalists, published by the newspaper, that the land purchase violated article 31 of the criminal law which would lead to confiscation of the assets illegally acquired by the plaintiff.

The statement was, therefore, not considered as defaming the plaintiff and the case would be dropped, according to the court’s ruling.

Both Thaksin and his wife late last month assigned another lawyer to file suit with the Criminal Court against Mr. Nam and 10 other committee members of misconduct charges involving the Ratchadaphisek land deal.

The suit said Mr. Nam and others had deliberately persecuted the former prime minister and his spouse as well as violated the Criminal Code and the National Counter-Corruption Act of 1999 by adopting undue procedures to prematurely hold them guilty of misconduct charges.

I aint no Thaksin fan but if he returns before or after elections he will always be looking over his shoulder now. He has made just too many enemies, and it is not the ones in uniform he really needs to worry about most.

Posted
He won't come back unless the new governmnet is friendly towards him. Otherwise, why would he?

What I am trying to say is that even if they are friendly to him he may not come back. He has made enemies of so many people that he will always be worried.

Thinking about law suits, I wonder if Thaksin holds the world record for the number of suits filed?

He's been doing it for years demanding vast sums from various journalists, lawyers and politicians in attempts to cower and intimidate them.

It would be interesting to see how many cases he's actually filed and total amount of damages claimed.

OAG to discuss extradition treaty with UK

Office of the Attorney-General agreed to send officials to the UK to discuss extradition law in an attempt to extradite ousted PM Thaksin Shinawatra and his wife Potjaman back to Thailand to face charges against him. Officials from the OAG and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will have a discussion with the UK attorney to clarify the extradition treaty between Thailand and Britain to see whether their charges are in compliance with the law. Thaksin is wanted on an arrest warrant for the Ratchadaphisek land purchase case, in which he is accused of abusing his authority while he was prime minister, which enabled his wife to buy the land at a below-market price. The Supreme Court's criminal division for holders of political positions ordered the couple to appear before the court for the first hearing set for September 25.

Thaksin cases 'will not take as long'

Thursday September 13, 2007

Court action against deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra would be unlikely to take as long as the trial of former Philippines president Joseph Estrada, an anti-graft activist said yesterday.

Veera Somkwamkid, secretary-general of the People's Network Against Corruption, said the Supreme Court's division handling criminal cases against holders of political positions had already demonstrated that it worked faster than the Filipino court, which took about six years to produce a verdict.

There's a lesson for Thailand to learn from having an Ex-Leader being given a life sentence in prison for corruption.

Congratulations to the Philippines for bravely deciding that enough is enough and to courageously take steps in the right direction.

The first time ever that they've had a leader to be locked up forever sets a good precedent worth following.

Its all well and good sentencing to life but its another thing putting him behind bars.

I would bet that he serves not a day of jail time. That is the way of things in the Philipines.

Hasnt Imelda spent the last 15 years or so spinning out her day in court.

It aint gonna happen.

Believe the judgement means he may well spend much of his sentence under house arrest. His appeal which will take a year or more which will keep him outside goal.
