Hegseth purge fuels Pentagon panic, ‘culture of fear’ claims

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s sudden firing of Navy Chief of Staff Jon Harrison has intensified turmoil inside the Pentagon, where officials describe a growing “culture of fear and intimidation.” Harrison’s dismissal — reportedly triggered by political infighting involving Trump-aligned appointees — marks the latest in a string of abrupt purges that have rattled military leadership.

In less than a year, Hegseth has removed several top generals, admirals, and advisers, often without public explanation. Current and former officials say the uncertainty is silencing dissent and creating a “keep your head down” mentality across the Department of Defense. “It’s run from the top down,” said one senior official.

Sources say the firing stemmed from tensions between Harrison, Navy Secretary John Phelan, and incoming undersecretary Hung Cao, a Trump-backed former Senate candidate with deep MAGA ties. Harrison and Phelan had sought to limit the undersecretary’s power — prompting Cao to appeal directly to Hegseth’s team. Harrison was terminated before Cao even took office, blindsiding Phelan and other senior staff.

The White House quickly backed Hegseth’s move. “President Trump has full confidence in Secretary Hegseth,” spokesperson Anna Kelly said, framing the shake-ups as part of the mission to “Make America Strong Again.”

The episode follows Hegseth’s February purge of Joint Chiefs Chair C.Q. Brown and other senior leaders, and his recent ultimatum to top brass to “resign if your heart sinks.” Insiders warn the shake-ups could erode trust and weaken institutional independence as Hegseth consolidates control.

“It adds to the climate of fear,” said one former defense official. “People are being removed at random — no warning, no transparency.”

Key Takeaways:

  • Hegseth fired Navy’s top aide amid MAGA-linked internal feud.

  • Pentagon insiders warn of “intimidation and retaliation.”

  • Trump and White House fully back Hegseth’s sweeping purge.

How democratic of you. You must be a democrat.

I sometimes wonder if the military brass hold clandestine meetings to discuss just how far they'll let this man-baby go. If they walked in on him in a room with ketchup stained walls  while he jumped up and down screaming "Nuke _fill in the blank country_!" - would they comply or would they invoke the 25th? Perhaps give him a warm hamberder and a cup of covfefe and send him back to bed?

Nobody's being removed "at random".

Here's the guys who are nervous...

Meanwhile, recruiting and re-enlistments are way up.

Should generals in the Pentagon that are afraid of losing a job really be generals in the Pentagon?

No, recruiting is not "way up",  The US military had paused enlistment targets for 2 years, even reducing them. Now that it is able to take in more recruits it is picking up the backlog of people who deferred their enlistment  because there was no space for them.  You can draw your conclusions in another year.  Despite the recent recruitment gains, the overall size of the military workforce is down 38%+ from 1980.

The US military changed its recruitment criteria over the past decade to be able to induct more applicants. A cynic might say, standards were reduced. Others will say, that the parameters were adjusted to better reflect the military's needs. The reality is that the number of people applying to join the military has been decreasing for the past 40 years.   The Biden administration started the military pay increases 3 years ago. Military pay has increased by 4.5% or more for three consecutive years. Trump is claiming credit for changes initiated several years ago.

Did you know that the DOD reports that 77% of young adults in the US are unqualified to serve without a waiver.

The three most-common factors for disqualification are obesity, educational deficits, and criminal or drug abuse records. Young adults also report low interest in serving. In a 2024 survey, 87% of people aged 16–21 said they were either “probably not” or “definitely not” considering enlistment

Hegseth announces Qatar will build air force facility at US base in Idaho.

This for a country who has given a 747 to Donald Trump, and 1.8 billion $dollars$ to HAMAS

Wasn't this originally arranged for under Biden? Maybe I'm wrong but I thought so. No matter. It's a necessary arrangement. Otherwise, China will be moving in and replacing the US at its largest middle eastern base in Qatar. This is an instance that I don't care whether it was Trump or Biden who did it. The base needs to go ahead.

In Australia also, particularly the Universities. And a lot of the public service.

No I did not. Look at the number of applicants v. the number of recruits. Applications have been in freefall for the past 40 years. In order to  gain recruits, standards had to be "adjusted'. The quality levels recruits and lack of interest over the past 5 years necessitated that the military pause to restructure its enlistment parameters. People who would have enlisted 2-3 years ago were deferred.

Do you understand what a delay  means? What we are seeing today is that people who were in the pipeline 2-3 years ago were processed in 2025. The process started before Trump took office. The pay raises that are in place today were started 3 years ago.  That is why I wrote that the data should be looked at in a year from now. It is no different than orders on a new vehicle. The sale is recorded when the payment is made, not when a person enters the showroom or makes a deposit, and has to wait for delivery. A portion of the the recruits today were waiting for a callback. They didn't show up this month or last month or even 6 months ago. They were waiting for things like a  intake facility renovations in San Diego  and  to be completed  and for 1800 homes at Fort Sill OK to be renovated. It is difficult to train personnel when the NCOs and officers don't have rooves over their heads.  If and when the recruitment levels  reach the levels they were 10 or 20 years ago, then you can crack open your malt liquor and celebrate.

I should imagine that some very firm albeit informal and unwritten "protocols" are in place.
