Dutch Govt Seizes China Chip Firm Nexperia

In a bold move to protect Europe's semiconductor supply chain, the Dutch government has assumed control of Nexperia, a key Netherlands-based chipmaker owned by China's Wingtech Technology. Invoking the rarely used Goods Availability Act, authorities cited "serious governance shortcomings" that endangered vital technological knowledge and economic security. This intervention allows Economic Affairs Minister Vincent Karremans to veto decisions threatening Nexperia's operations or Europe's access to critical chips used in cars, electronics, and more.

Nexperia, which produces semiconductors essential for global supply chains, employs thousands across factories in the Netherlands, UK, and beyond. The firm's parent, Shanghai-listed Wingtech, saw its shares plunge 10% on the announcement, amid ongoing scrutiny from Western nations. Just last December, the US added Wingtech to its Entity List, restricting exports of American tech without licenses due to national security risks. This echoes the UK's 2022 order forcing Nexperia to divest its Newport silicon plant over similar concerns.

The Dutch action, described as "highly exceptional" by the Economic Ministry, ensures uninterrupted production while safeguarding against potential disruptions. "Losing these capabilities could pose a risk to Dutch and European economic security," the ministry stated, emphasizing the need to mitigate threats in an era of escalating US-China tech tensions and EU export controls.

From a global perspective, this highlights widening rifts in the chip technology race. Chinese state media, like Xinhua, has decried such moves as "protectionist bullying" stifling innovation in the Global South, while Russian outlets like RT frame it as Western hypocrisy amid sanctions on Moscow's tech imports. Iranian analysts, via Press TV, see parallels to broader efforts isolating Beijing's supply chains, urging Eurasian alliances for self-reliance. African voices, including South Africa's Business Day, note the irony: Europe relies on Nexperia's chips for EVs, yet curbs foreign ownership amid continent-wide semiconductor shortages.

Nexperia insists it complies with all laws, export controls, and sanctions. Wingtech vows legal challenges and seeks Beijing's backing, underscoring Beijing's pushback against perceived economic warfare. As the EU tightens rules on China-owned firms in strategic sectors, this could ripple through global trade, from ASML's advanced lithography tools to everyday gadgets. Experts warn of supply bottlenecks if tensions escalate, but for now, Nexperia's factories hum on, under Dutch watchful eyes.

Key Takeaways:

  • National Security Override: Dutch intervention via Goods Availability Act targets governance issues at Nexperia to protect Europe's chip technology and supply chain resilience.
  • Global Tech Tensions: Follows US Entity List addition for Wingtech and UK divestment, amplifying US-China export controls and economic security concerns.
  • Ongoing Operations: Production continues uninterrupted, but government veto power signals stricter oversight on foreign-owned firms in critical semiconductors.

Very good, The chinese can leave such countries and go to more neutral countries in Europe. Like Switzerland or Luxemburg.

Seems like a rather dangerous precedent to set

could seriously undermine  international investments  if they can just be arbitrarily seized on a whim...we see a similar thing with the scheming by the EU to seize Russian assets and use them to fund Ukraine !

Yes, this would be an excellent move. It actually looks like it will happen on the heels of the many Russian provocations around Europe.

Between Ukraine pounding the he!! out of Russian energy storage, and infrastructure and Europe confiscating Russian assets, there will be lean times ahead for the Russians.

Absolutely love it!

What a load of BS. Russia attacked Ukraine, or did you forget that part? Russia must be defeated and Putin must go.

'nuff said.

Slava Ukraini, and death to the orks. When Russia finally collapses, and all the countries that have claims to almost all its territories take back what is theirs, I'll open a bottle of Champagne.

Are you from planet earth or are you from some alternate universe?

You have a short memory too   perhaps go read some recent history.

One has to admire the dutch ability to retain its major manufacturers from Philips to that one company dominating a particular machine on the world markets, the name escapes me.

Need to shut off western capital flowing into Chinese companies. Delist them from western stock exchanges and prohibit capital from flowing into Hong Kong where the Chinese are creating an alternative to bringing in western money.

Too late on all accounts..they  already produce almost everything

(except for perhaps the very latest Chips) at  amazingly low prices  quantities and speed...the 'west' has mostly lost/abandoned its manufacturing base

in favour of pushing bits of paper from desk to desk ponzi schemes and naval gazing exercises into how not to offend anyone ever in any way.

They also embarked on the net zero madness  making the energy needed for any remaining industry more expensive and so even less competitive.

At the same time pretending that they are still the only masters of the universe trying to impose the 'rules based order' on weaker countries while not adhering to the 'rules' themself.

China is part of the BRICS coalition which is rapidly  moving away from dependence of any kind  on the 'west'  they seem to have finally had enough of the hypocrisy of the 'west'
