No Palestinian State, No Peace: Jordan’s King Warns

King Abdullah II of Jordan has issued a stark warning that the Middle East faces a precarious future if a Palestinian state is not realised. Speaking to BBC Panorama ahead of a summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, he emphasised the necessity of a peace process to resolve conflicts between Israelis and Palestinians. This comes amid the recent release of Israeli hostages by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

The summit discusses US President Donald Trump’s 20-point peace plan. King Abdullah highlighted the many failed attempts at peace in the region and advocated for a two-state solution as the only viable option. The summit follows recent tensions, including violence in Gaza and the contentious stance of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who remains opposed to the two-state approach.

Netanyahu cited previous issues with Gaza to argue against Palestinian statehood, reflecting on ongoing attacks and instability. During the UN General Assembly, Trump called for an urgent resolution, rallying regional leaders to back the peace initiative. King Abdullah expressed hope in Trump’s ability to drive the peace process, suggesting a broader regional peace is tied to the Palestinian future.

The Jordanian king questioned the commitment of some Israeli figures, while expressing optimism about cooperation with others, particularly under the current ceasefire agreement that sees Hamas handing governance to an independent Palestinian entity. He stressed the importance of President Trump’s continued involvement to maintain peace efforts, acknowledging the potential hurdles in the agreement's details.

Jordan and Israel have shared a peace treaty since 1994, under the late King Hussein and former Israeli PM Yitzhak Rabin. Despite internal opposition within Jordan, where over 50% of the population is of Palestinian descent, cooperation on security issues persists. King Abdullah remains hopeful of witnessing a final peace agreement in his lifetime, driven by a desire for future generations to experience peace.

Recent violence has claimed over 67,000 lives in Gaza, according to health ministry reports. While history may cast doubt, King Abdullah believes that the current situation offers a unique chance for peace.

Key Takeaways:

  • King Abdullah stresses the importance of a Palestinian state for future peace.
  • Trump's peace plan is under discussion amidst ongoing regional tensions.
  • Jordan continues to support a two-state solution and regional cooperation.

  • I believe King Abdullah is correct.   There is now a great deal of popular global support for Palestine; as well as anger against Israel and the Zionists for their war crimes and genocide.

  • There’s a lot of support for a Palestinian state rite now……if I were the Palestinians I’d be pushing hard for that and removing hammas from their lands!

  • Palestinian state or not, imo there will never be peace in the middle east until the hatred for one another is gone.

But what is a Palestinian?  Until 1946, being Palestinian meant you were Jewish.  The Palestine Post, The Palestine Symphony Orchestra - not Arabic, but Jewish institutions.

We can blame the Roman Emperor Hadrian for the confusion following the Bar Kokhba revolt, but nobody bothers with historical facts any longer. :coffee1:

There is now a great deal of popular global support for Palestine; as well as anger against Israel and the Zionists for their war crimes and genocide.  Even Jewish writers have acknowledged the latter point and the need for Netanyahu and his far right colleagues to be arrested, tried and imprisoned for these crimes (as well as the existing corruption charges against Netanyahu to be tried).

There will be always Sympathizers and followers of Hamas in Palestine.

Since they don't wear stickers "I like Hamas" you can't identify them. Best is to integrate them in a society of peace in a state with acknowledged borders

So, where's Yasser Arafat when we need him? (if only for entertainment value). Offer him 99% of what he wants and he'll turn it down ...

Not so simple as to what a Palestinian is...

Before 1948:
During the British Mandate, "Palestinian" was a geographical and citizenship-based term for all inhabitants, regardless of religion or ethnicity. Many publications referred to "Palestinian Jews" and "Palestinian Arabs" to distinguish the groups, but others used "Palestinian" primarily for Jews. For example, institutions like the Palestine Symphony Orchestra and the Anglo Palestine Bank were Jewish

The deal on offer dues not guarantee an Palestinian State but does guarantee Palestine being governed by an unelected foreign organisation headed by pro-Israel foreigners.

’Colonialism 2025’.

Its a recipe for starting the next war.

He died in 2004.

I have a theory. A theory I developed by reading history. Here it is.

Countries where the population is happy and have basic rights to things like healthcare and education, usually don't declare wars on others.

Golda Meir said she was a Palestinian and held a Palestinian p/p until 1948 ...

Kudos for Trump, however it is only temporary.  There is no way what the Israelis will concede land that is , in their terms, "God Given".

79 years of the same thing.  It won't change permanently.

Nothing wrong with having a Palestinian state, problem is the terrorists of Hamas... which must go. The PA in the West Bank seems to be getting along just fine. Get rid of Hamas, and let the Palestinian Aurthorities in the West Bank take over and give it a shot.

As an aside, there should already be a Patestinian state, as Clinton almost did it in the early 90s, Israel agreed to it... but Arafat ultimately said "No".

There is a Palestinian state, it's called Joran and takes up by far the largest area of the old protectorate. How much land do the Muslims want? they have 98% of the middle east already.

That is what Israel has been doing for the last 2 years .

Trying to remove Hamas from Gaza

This.

With all the euphoria of hostages returning, we can be sure the hostages will hate the Palestinians openly or secretly. And equally all Palestinians will hate the IDF.

As opposed to Palestine being governed by the UN, an unelected foreign organization headed by anti-Israel foreigners.

For now yes.

But we saw with WWI that a peace without understanding just leads to new war.

Not everything is always the same as before .

Not everything goes in cycles

Your expectations will be disappointed. There is an existential impasse in that Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah etc. deny Israel’s right to exist.

1 minute ago, Nick Carter icp said:

Yes it is.

Things change, but they always stay the same too.

We know from past history that if a peace is not just the likelihood of another war is large.

The problem is exacerbated by the eye for an eye ideology here, which both sides subscribe to. Imagine you lost your children and wife in one of the IDF bombings. What would stop you from going on a rampage at a bus stop in Israel? Israel would then react with yet another punitive expedition and on and on the cycle of war continues. It's been like this for over 60 years in that part of the world.

Even if the Palestinians get their state, they don't have a diaspora of wealthy muslims in New York that will pay for their state, what chance do they have? And their hatred of Israel is surely deeper than the seven seas.
