Myanmar’s young people are facing a mounting mental health emergency, according to a new UNDP report released on World Mental Health Day. The study, titled “A Generation on Edge,” paints a stark picture of life for youth in a country gripped by conflict, economic collapse and fear.

One in seven young people — nearly 2.5 million — live in constant fear for their safety, while over six million feel unsafe walking alone at night. Anxiety and stress are widespread, with rates exceeding 60% in Kayah and 45% in Chin and Rakhine, Myanmar’s most conflict-ridden states.

The report highlights how insecurity, forced conscription, drug proliferation and economic hardship are eroding the mental well-being of a generation. Young women with disabilities face the highest levels of fear, while young men report greater exposure to abduction risks. Trust in law enforcement has collapsed, with most youth choosing not to report crimes due to fear and stigma.

UNDP’s Kanni Wignaraja warned that “trauma is becoming the norm” for Myanmar’s youth, and without urgent support, the damage could be irreversible. Despite this, nearly half of respondents remain hopeful about their futures, and two-thirds still believe peace is possible — a fragile optimism in a country where nearly 7 million children are out of school and four in ten young adults are considering emigration.

The report links mental health directly to human security, calling for community-based support, protection systems and integration of mental health into all humanitarian efforts. Since the 2021 coup, Myanmar’s socioeconomic foundations have crumbled, exacerbated by military manipulation of the economy, rampant inflation, and the March 2025 earthquake.

International aid has faltered amid shifting geopolitical priorities, leaving Myanmar’s humanitarian response critically underfunded. With only 12% of the UN’s 2025 budget disbursed, the crisis deepens.

UNDP urges renewed investment in youth safety and dignity. Without it, Myanmar risks losing not just a generation — but its future.
