John Bolton, former national security adviser to US President Donald Trump, has been hit with federal charges, threatening him with potential decades-long imprisonment. The indictment follows an FBI search of Bolton's home and office in August, part of an investigation concerning the handling of classified information.

On Thursday, a grand jury in Maryland found sufficient evidence to indict Bolton on serious charges. The prosecutors accuse 76-year-old Bolton of unlawfully handling national defence information. According to a 26-page indictment, he faces eight counts of transmission and ten counts of unlawful retention of classified information.

Allegations suggest Bolton used personal email and messaging apps to transmit top-secret intelligence about the US national defence to unauthorised parties. If convicted, Bolton could be imprisoned for up to ten years for each charge imposed.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi delivered a strong statement, reinforcing that "there is one tier of justice for all Americans," and asserting that no one, regardless of their status, is above the law. Bolton has maintained his innocence, and his lawyer has confirmed that he appropriately managed all records. This indictment makes Bolton the third prominent critic of Trump to face charges recently. Bolton is the third prominent critic of Trump to face charges recently, following similar cases involving former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Bolton previously served under Trump before being dismissed in 2019, later criticising Trump in his memoir, The Room Where It Happened. Controversy surrounding the book's release included a lawsuit from the White House, which claimed the memoir contained classified information. A judge allowed the book to be published, ignoring the administration's attempts to halt its distribution.

US President Donald Trump responded to news of Bolton's indictment with his characteristic bluntness, labelling Bolton as "a bad guy." Trump has previously described Bolton using harsh terms, calling him "grossly incompetent" and "a liar." The unfolding legal drama involves political tensions and accusations of misuse of power by high-profile figures.

Looking forward, Bolton faces a legal battle where the charges could lead to a lengthy imprisonment if proven guilty. This comes alongside broader indictments against other Trump adversaries, following allegations of partisanship and power misuse levelled by Trump, who demanded action against his political rivals in a social media post.

Key Takeaways:

  • John Bolton has been indicted on charges of mishandling classified information, facing up to 10 years per charge if convicted.
  • The charges form part of a series of indictments against critics of US President Donald Trump.
  • Trump has dismissed Bolton's character, reinforcing a tense political backdrop to the legal proceedings.

Will charges against Trump be following?

I've heard the the NYT reported that the case was started under Biden,

after Bolten reported his AOL account was hacked by Iranian hackers.

and they saw what he had in his account.

The pot calling the kettle black.
