A startling report highlights the perilous situation facing 196 uncontacted Indigenous tribes around the globe. These communities are under growing threat from logging, mining, and illegal activities, particularly in South America's Amazon basin.

The report from Survival International, a London-based Indigenous rights group, reveals that approximately 65% of these tribes face logging threats, 40% are endangered by mining, and 20% by agribusiness. The threats to these tribes, described as "silent genocides," often go unnoticed by the media and are fuelled by roads, drug traffickers, and lack of government protection.

Governments often sideline uncontacted tribes due to their non-voting status and occupation of territories targeted for economic exploitation. Stereotypes as "lost tribes" obscure their reality as contemporary societies choosing isolation to avoid violence, slavery, and disease. Survival International's Fiona Watson cautions that inaction could lead to the disappearance of half of these groups within a decade.

More than 95% of the world's uncontacted tribes reside in the Amazon, with smaller groups in Southeast Asia and the Pacific. They live self-sufficiently, maintaining rich cultural traditions. However, their exposure to outsiders can lead to disease and cultural destruction. Experts like Dr. Subhra Bhattacharjee stress the need for "no contact, no-go zones" to prevent potentially devastating interactions.

Efforts to safeguard these tribes demand legal recognition of their territories and restrictions on industry intrusion. Urgent mapping is needed to safeguard these lands from exploitation. Corporations and consumers are urged to trace and cease trade in resources sourced from Indigenous territories.

When all these peoples disappear - as they almost certainly will, given the modern world's endless greed - we lose a great part of ourselves, our past, our variety, our cultural richness.

If they know this is happening then they need to start protecting their lands and culture immediately and not just study it. Haven’t we learned from history what will happen.
