Macron Demands Suu Kyi’s Release Amid Health Fears

French President Emmanuel Macron has issued a forceful appeal for the immediate release of Myanmar’s former leader Aung San Suu Kyi, citing grave concerns over her deteriorating health in military detention.

In a personal letter to the 80-year-old Nobel laureate, Macron expressed alarm after hearing from Suu Kyi’s son, Kim Aris, that she was struggling to access proper medical care while held in solitary confinement. “We continue to call for your immediate and unconditional release,” Macron wrote, extending his plea to include President Win Myint and all political prisoners jailed since the February 2021 coup.

Suu Kyi, once hailed as a global icon of peaceful resistance, has been sentenced to 27 years on charges widely condemned as politically motivated. The military regime claims electoral fraud justified its takeover, though international observers found no evidence of wrongdoing.

Macron’s intervention adds weight to mounting global pressure on Myanmar’s junta. He condemned the coup as a “brutal and bloody challenge” that has plunged the country into prolonged crisis, with devastating consequences for its people and neighbours. France, he said, would support peaceful solutions led by legitimate political figures.

Kim Aris welcomed the French president’s support, calling it “hugely appreciated” and urging other world leaders to follow suit. “It is crucial that words translate into actions,” he said, “and that means liberating my mother and restoring democracy.”

Suu Kyi’s health has been a growing concern. In September, Aris revealed she was suffering from heart problems and described her detention as “cruel and life-threatening.” The military has dismissed such reports as “fabrications.”

Despite her fall from grace over the Rohingya crisis, Suu Kyi remains a potent symbol of Myanmar’s democratic aspirations. Thousands marked her 80th birthday in June with tributes and protests, underscoring the enduring public demand for her release.

Macron’s call joins a chorus of international voices—including David Lammy and William Hague—urging Myanmar’s military to end arbitrary detentions and allow the country to reclaim its democratic path.
