New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has unveiled an all-female slate of co-chairs for his transition team — a lineup that includes former Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan, signaling a sharp progressive turn as he prepares to take office on January 1.

 

The five-member team also features Maria Torres-Springer, former first deputy mayor; Grace Bonilla, head of United Way of New York City; former deputy mayor for health and human services Melanie Hartzog; and political strategist Elana Leopold.

 

Khan, a close ally of Sen. Bernie Sanders, made her name as a tough antitrust crusader against corporate monopolies during the Biden administration. Her inclusion underscores Mamdani’s vow to confront what he calls the city’s “oligarchy” while pursuing tax hikes on the wealthy to fund cost-of-living relief for working families.

 

Mamdani said his transition will be powered by grassroots donors: “We will be funded by the very people who brought us here — the working people left behind by the politics of this city.” He called on supporters to resume donations, saying the transition would need staff, research, and infrastructure to “meet the moment.”

 

While the White House has not yet contacted him, Mamdani said he was open to speaking with President Donald Trump — who has called him a “communist” and threatened to cut federal funding to New York — about “ways to serve New Yorkers” and mitigate the impact of Trump’s economic policies.

 

“We will cast a wide net,” Mamdani added, promising to recruit both grassroots organizers and national policy experts to “deliver the change this city deserves.”
