Senators reach tentative deal to end the government shutdown

Featured Replies

Senators struck an agreement Sunday, projecting confidence that it will be sufficient to end the lengthy U.S. government shutdown, three sources with direct knowledge of the details told NBC News.

The agreement, reached by a group of Democrats who teamed up with Republicans, should have the necessary 60 votes to clear the Senate, these sources said. It would then need to pass the House and earn President Donald Trump's signature to become law and reopen the government.

I think it's about time. The Democrats have made very clear where the Republicans stand on Obamacare.

One unfortunate consequence for the Republicans of this deal is that Speaker Johnson will have to call the House back into session. Which means he's going to have to swear in (and swear at?) the new Democratic representative from New Mexico. Which means that the votes are in place for the house to pass their version of a bill to force the Justice Dept to release most of the Epstein files. I's sure all those people who accused various Democrats of figuring in those files will be thrilled.

I wouldn't mind betting that the "Speaker Invertebrate" (not mine - credit goes to @bendejo) will come up with some wheeze to hold the vote ( matter of urgency - no doubt following a precedent set by Nancy Pelosi) before he gets round to swearing her in!

Of course the next good idea to avoid a government shut down would be to pass a law forbidding ANY government recess until ALL the business for that particular session has been completed, at the expense of the recess. If the business is not completed, then there is NO recess until it IS complete.

Also pass a bill to pay ALL government employees 24/7/ 365.

The only case I could find Where Nancy pelosi delayed swearing in a Republican representative is when there was a really close election (6 votes) and the results were being disputed in court.

Well yes, but I am speculating that the motion will be tabled, voted on and defeated before he gets around to swearing her in, procedural rules governing scheduling or some such excuse...
