I'm planning to buy a used motorbike and would like to find out how to insure it incase of an accident or theft. I'm based in chiang Mai.

Easy one - call Khun Wanna or Khun Neng on 038 415 795  (AA Insurance) - both speak good English

Wanna and Neng keep getting recommended. But I just did go to them for my (car) insurance and was not unhappy with the service - even though it was conducted entirely over the 'phone. Now I am lumped with having to go to Pattaya to pick up the certificate - because they don't want to consign the policy to the post (past bad experience with the post). Is a motor bike insurance with AA goign to be worth it if the OP has to travel to Pattay and back to collect his policy?

Unless of course he would be glad for a reason to go to Pattaya. Is that the reason for Wana/Neng popularity?

Maybe ask them to post by EMS (recorded post ) ?

You're right. Why didn't she suggest it, I wonder.

EMS (postal service for a single policy) would be rather expensive, no? About equal to the cost of the policy itself?

I don't have this year's policy handy, but I see we paid 430 baht last year for a policy on my 3 year old bike. The company is out of Bangkok but the local agent is in Chiang Mai. Sorry, no local contact. I guess you just need to find a local Thai who has insurance and use their agent. Or keep asking local farang.

As a Pattaya local, I've used AA-Insure and found them easy to deal with.

However, as you are in Chiang-Mai...you might want to log onto the www.GT-Riders.com site (located in Chiang Mai)...and look on their forum.

They are talking about and checking into possibly getting various group insurance policies to cover bikes. One of the insurance agencies that are

checking rate with is AA-Insure (which created a group policy for the local Pattaya Harley [ugh] bikers)...but other companies are under consideration.

At this time nothing has been decided...so your input/questions may be helpful.

Don't sweat it dude, I just use the dealership where I bought my bike from.

If you're buying second hand just roll on down to the nearest bike dealership, they'll be able to get you hooked up with some insurance there. :o
