Suvarnabhumi Airport held a full-scale contingency drill, on 14 November 2025, for its baggage handling system, simulating emergency evacuations during an earthquake and potential radiation leakage from a malfunctioning X-ray shielding curtain. The exercise aimed to ensure staff, airlines and operators could respond safely and restore services efficiently.

The drill, named Baggage Handling Emergency Exercise 2025 (BHEMEX-25), was opened by Mr Suebphong Khamhong, Deputy Director of Maintenance at Suvarnabhumi Airport. It involved evacuating personnel and managing baggage system operations under emergency scenarios. Observers included airport executives, operational staff and representatives from related agencies.

The exercise integrated multiple airport departments, including baggage handling, airport standards and occupational health, electrical and mechanical, airport and building operations, and medical services. External partners, such as Loxley Evolution Technology, Aero Corporation, ground handling services and airlines, also participated to enhance coordination and response skills.

A key focus was the simulated radiation leak from the X-ray screening area at the Sorting Area on the ground floor, in compliance with the Radiation Work Standards Act B.E. 2564 (Section 18), which mandates annual emergency drills. The scenario allowed personnel to practice correct and safe procedures for handling hazardous situations involving radiation.

Mr Suebphong highlighted that the drill strengthened understanding, knowledge, and operational skills among participants, while reducing risks to service continuity. The exercise also demonstrated the airport’s commitment to safety standards and international best practices, ensuring confidence among staff, airlines and passengers.

Kaoded reported that the drill underscores Suvarnabhumi Airport’s dedication to becoming a safe and reliable regional aviation hub, capable of responding effectively to emergencies while maintaining high service standards.

Key Takeaways

• BHEMEX-25 simulated both earthquake evacuation and X-ray radiation leakage scenarios.

• The drill involved multiple airport departments and external partners for integrated response.
