How long before re-starting the salt chlorinator after pool idle

Featured Replies

During the flooding I removed our pool pump to prevent it getting drowned.

Despite my putting in a floating cholrine dispenser our pool is now a lovely green colour (I swear our zombie algae actually likes chlorine).

I've re-started the pump along with the UV thingy (although it probably needs a new tube**) done a filter backwash and shocked the pool along with a double dose of algicide!

The salt level is OK (only rain water entered the pool) but I have the chlorinator turned off and on bypass so the green doesn't go in and potentially hurt the cell. But just how long do we have to wait before firing up the chlorinator? Hopefully the worst of the green will be gone in a few days.

Any thoughts, or just wing it once we can see the pool bottom?

We need the pool back in commission in time for our Xmas mega-party on December 21st (could delay to the 28th)!!

** A new tube was delivered in kit-form despite being covered in "Fragile" stickers (cue the old one about "Photos - do not bend" - "Oh yes they do"). It was apparently the last tube in the known universe and is now on back-order.

Depending on how bad the bloom is, I would consider floculating and vacuum to waste.

If you don't want to go through that tedious process I wouldn't worry as algea won't hurt the cell.

Try cleaning the UV bulb with alcohol, once most of the algae has gone.

This should be done on a regular basis. 3/6 monthly as the biofilm stops the frequency that does the kill.

If it's a cheap Thai one, it most likely will not be working very well as they use glass & not crystal for the bulb.

@Bagwain Great, thanks for that.

The pool was flocculated yesterday afternoon and this morning I could actually see the bottom through the remaining green.

I vacuumed a load of delicious pea-soup to waste so I'll let things settle out again and then fire up the chlorinator.

UV thingy is a 55W unit that came from the UK so I'm assuming it's using the proper materials, I've even found replacement tubes (Philips, made in Poland) from a Shopee supplier here 🙂

We should be good to go!
