A trailer-truck carrying more than 25 tonnes of fireworks from Laem Chabang Port in Chonburi overturned into a canal in Suphan Buri on 30 November, following GPS directions. The driver, 44 and his wife escaped without injury, despite the vehicle plunging into the water. Over a thousand boxes of fireworks were on board.

The driver said he left Laem Chabang on 29 November, stopping in Samut Sakhon before heading to a warehouse in Suphan Buri City. The cargo was initially destined for Hat Yai in southern Thailand for New Year distribution, but due to severe flooding, the company obtained temporary storage permission in Suphan Buri. Unfamiliar with the route, the driver followed GPS guidance along a dirt road by a canal. The narrow, soft-soil curve caused the truck to start sinking before tipping into the canal.

Sgt. Maj. Thanat Sridusadee, assistant to the Suphan Buri provincial defence commander, said the area was very dark and flooded, which weighed down the containers holding the fireworks and hindered rescue efforts. Recovery resumed the next day using two large cranes to lift the containers from the water. Inspection revealed the fireworks were completely wet and damaged.

CH7 reported the company has dispatched another trailer-truck to move the damaged cargo for careful destruction. Authorities emphasised the risks of relying solely on GPS in rural areas and the added hazards posed by flooding and poor road conditions.

Key Takeaways

• Over 25 tonnes of fireworks were damaged after a truck plunged into a canal in Suphan Buri.

• The driver and his wife escaped unharmed despite the incident.

• Recovery efforts involved cranes and the damaged fireworks will be safely destroyed.

It's unbelievable that such a large quantity can be transported in a regular lorry.
It could have been a gigantic bomb.
Apparently, no one thought about that either, the mai pen rai attitude.
