Italian Drug Suspect Caught in Bangkok on DTV

Immigration authorities have arrested a 26-year-old Italian man wanted for drug trafficking, locating him in a Bangkok condominium where he had been living under Thailand’s five-year “Destination Thailand Visa” (DTV). The arrest followed a tip-off from the Italian Embassy’s Police Attaché’s Office, prompting Thai officials to track down the fugitive in the Ekkamai area. He has been taken into custody and is awaiting deportation proceedings.

Italian investigators had earlier issued an arrest warrant through a court in Asti, charging the suspect, known as Mr Simone, with supplying narcotics to a distribution network in Italy. Their investigation found that heroin, cocaine, ketamine, ecstasy (MDMA) and LSD were smuggled from several countries via postal parcels between September 2024 and June 2025. Two recipients of the drug parcels were arrested in Italy, leading authorities to identify Simone as the supplier to the gang.

Upon learning he was under investigation, Simone fled Italy and later entered Thailand in October 2025, acquiring a DTV, a multiple-entry visa designed for remote workers and so-called digital nomads. The visa allows stays of up to 180 days per entry and is valid for five years, making it attractive to long-term foreign visitors. Immigration officers said the suspect was living quietly in a condominium and evading attention.

Police obtained a search warrant from the Bangkok South Criminal Court before entering his residence. No drugs or illegal items were found inside the unit, but authorities proceeded with his arrest based on the outstanding Italian warrant. He was transferred to the Immigration Detention Center as officials began coordination with the Italian Embassy.

The case highlights the challenges frontier-less lifestyles pose for immigration monitoring, particularly when new visa categories attract longer stays. Authorities say the cooperation between Thai and Italian police allowed for a swift response once the alert was issued. Officials have not indicated whether additional checks on DTV holders will be introduced.

Khoasod reported that authorities are now working with Italian officials to arrange Simone’s deportation so he can face charges in Italy. Further updates are expected once the extradition logistics are confirmed. The investigation in Italy remains ongoing.

"No drugs were found." He obviously wasn't stupid enough to send the parcels from Thailand. Wonder where he did send the parcels from.

Simone was certainly not any kind of kingpin. Parcel dope is low quantity and, unless he inherited a criminal background, 26 is too young for the big money.

I hope he's acquitted.

Here comes the campaign to remove DTVs; his visa status really does not matter.

Until history caught up.

When the headline said "caught on DTV" I was imagining some new Digital Tele Vision service being used as CCTV

Let's handle this the Thai :Do away with DTV visas immediately.

While you at it , no more visa exemption either, which will result in a drug and prostitution free Thailand.

MAKE SIAM GREAT AGAIN!

Please explain ,for a simpleton like me , Exactly how  "no more visa exemptions"  or "doing away with  DTV visas will result in a drug and prostitution free Thailand ?   99.9% of prostitutes here are Thai nationals  and the majority of them around 97% cater purely for Thai men . It is integrated into Thai society and effectively part of the culture here

Illegal drugs are not brought here by visitors on visa exempt or DTV visas either, Its all either home produced or is smuggled in from neighbouring Myanmar, no visa required.

You appear to be rather ignorant of the facts regarding this,    probably better if you don't comment on things you obviously know very little about

There is nothing to explain. What needs explanation is your inability to see the sarcasm in my reply.

It's so evidently tongue in cheek that it baffles me how anybody could take this seriously.

You must totally lack a sense of humor.
