China Rolls Out Humanoid Traffic Robot on City Streets

Featured Replies

Cities in China are embracing robotics with the debut of Hangxing No.1 — a humanoid traffic-management robot now directing vehicles and pedestrians in Hangzhou. Launched December 1, 2025, in the city’s Binjiang district, the AI-powered officer immediately captured public attention.

Hangxing No.1 operates at busy intersections, mimicking standard traffic-control gestures such as “stop” and “go,” complete with a built-in whistle and synchronized traffic-light signaling. Its sensor suite — including cameras and radar — enables it to detect common traffic violations like helmetless riders, line-crossing, and jaywalking.

When issues arise, the robot issues polite voice warnings on the spot.

This deployment is part of a broader push toward “smart-city” infrastructure that integrates robotics into public services. Local authorities say Hangxing No.1 was trained using real police officer gestures and continues learning through real-time data at intersections. Future upgrades may give it interactive voice features, enabling it to provide directions or safety advice to pedestrians.

The robot’s rollout in Hangzhou marks one of China’s first real-world efforts to apply humanoid AI in traffic control — potentially reshaping how urban mobility and law enforcement converge in fast-growing cities.

Key Takeaways

Hangzhou’s Hangxing No.1 robot is actively directing traffic and issuing voice warnings at real intersections.

Equipped with cameras, radar, and gesture recognition, the robot can detect violations like helmetless riding and jaywalking.

The move signals a growing trend toward integrating AI-powered humanoid robots into urban traffic systems across China.
