China Repatriates 1,100 Fraud Suspects from Myanmar this month

China has brought home more than a thousand nationals accused of telecom fraud in Myanmar, as Beijing intensifies a regional crackdown on criminal networks operating along its southern border.

The Ministry of Public Security said 1,178 Chinese citizens linked to scam operations in Myawaddy, a notorious hub for cross‑border fraud, have been returned since the start of December. They were transferred in several batches via Thailand, escorted by Chinese police, following coordinated operations with Myanmar’s security forces.

The latest handovers come after a ministerial meeting on 14 November, where China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam agreed to deepen cooperation against telecom fraud syndicates that have proliferated across the region. These groups, often based in semi‑lawless border zones, have been accused of running large‑scale online scams targeting victims across Asia.

Authorities in China, Myanmar and Thailand recently launched another joint sweep in the Myawaddy area, where Myanmar’s forces dismantled several scam compounds and detained groups of suspects. The region has long been associated with criminal activity, fuelled by weak governance and the presence of armed groups.

According to China’s public security ministry, more than 6,600 Chinese nationals suspected of telecom fraud have been repatriated since 20 February, underscoring the scale of the government’s campaign. Beijing has framed the effort as essential to protecting citizens and restoring order in areas where criminal networks have thrived.

The ministry said the multinational crackdown remains ongoing and pledged continued cooperation with neighbouring countries to “dismantle criminal networks and safeguard public security”.

The latest transfers highlight both the reach of China’s law‑enforcement efforts and the growing regional consensus on tackling cross‑border fraud, which has become a major political and social concern across Southeast Asia.
