Cambodia has welcomed a major new air link that officials say will help draw more international visitors and strengthen the country’s global connectivity. Turkish Airlines has launched its first direct service between Istanbul and Phnom Penh, a move the Cambodian government describes as a significant step forward for the tourism sector.

Tourism Minister Huot Hak spoke at a ceremony at Techo International Airport on 11 December to mark the inaugural flight. He credited the achievement to the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Manet and the coordinated efforts of government agencies, Turkish partners and industry stakeholders.

The minister highlighted the strategic value of partnering with Turkish Airlines, one of the world’s largest carriers, which serves more than 350 destinations across 130 countries. He said the new route would showcase Cambodia’s tourism potential to a wider global audience while opening the door to increased investment.

“This connection will help promote Cambodia worldwide,” he said, noting that improved access remains central to the country’s long‑term tourism strategy.

The service operates three times a week using a Boeing 777‑300ER, adding to the growing number of international carriers now flying to Cambodia. Turkish Airlines becomes the 36th airline serving the country, with routes linking Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville to 46 cities in 17 countries.

The launch comes as Cambodia continues to see a steady rise in air travel. According to the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, the country handled 5.66 million international air passengers in the first ten months of 2025 — a 14 percent increase compared with the same period last year.

Officials hope the new Istanbul–Phnom Penh route will help sustain that momentum by offering travellers from Europe, the Middle East and beyond a more direct path into Cambodia. Industry observers say the link could also strengthen business ties, given Istanbul’s role as a major global transit hub.

For Cambodia, which has been working to diversify its tourism markets and reduce reliance on regional arrivals, the new route represents both symbolic progress and practical opportunity. As the first passengers disembarked on Wednesday, the message from Phnom Penh was clear: improved connectivity is central to the country’s ambitions — and this latest addition marks another step in that direction.
