French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to China in early December ended on a lighter, culturally symbolic note with outings featuring giant pandas, table tennis and a visit to the ancient Dujiangyan irrigation system, underscoring Chinese diplomatic hosting style beyond formal talks.

Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron attended formal receptions in Beijing including high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping that focused on trade, technology and geopolitical issues including the war in Ukraine, but the most striking images came later in Chengdu, far from the capital.

In Chengdu, the presidential couples toured the Dujiangyan Dam, a UNESCO World Heritage irrigation system dating back to the third century BC, offering a backdrop of ancient Chinese civilization to the diplomatic visit.

The Macrons also engaged in symbolic soft-power activities: Macron played table tennis with players and students, and Brigitte Macron visited the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding where pandas — emblematic in China’s panda diplomacy — serve as goodwill ambassadors and cultural bridges.

French officials highlighted the warm public reception from local students and residents, who cheered Macron at Sichuan University, and Macron described the visit as a sign of mutual trust and a desire to “act together” despite international tensions and trade imbalances.

Experts say this mix of formal negotiations and informal cultural engagement reflects China’s broader diplomatic strategy of intertwining statecraft with cultural symbolism, using iconic elements like pandas and ping-pong to humanize high-level engagements.

Moving forward, both sides are expected to continue balancing substantive geopolitical and economic discussions with symbolic cultural diplomacy, as negotiations on trade and global issues such as Ukraine remain ongoing into 2026, while exchanges like panda loans to foreign zoos continue to play a role in bilateral ties.

Key Takeaways

• Macron’s state visit to China balanced high-level talks with symbolic cultural engagement featuring pandas, ping-pong and historic sites.

• Chengdu’s Dujiangyan Dam and panda center visits highlighted China’s use of cultural diplomacy alongside formal negotiations.

• The visit signals ongoing efforts by China and France to manage complex geopolitical and economic relationships through both policy and people-to-people gestures.
