Security forces from the Pha Muang Task Force killed three suspected drug traffickers and seized 500,000 methamphetamine tablets following an armed clash in Mae Ai district, Chiang Mai, officials said on 22 December. The confrontation occurred during a night patrol aimed at intercepting cross-border drug smuggling, with no injuries reported among officers.

According to authorities, the incident took place at about 8.00pm on 21 December in Ban Na Ma Uen, Mae Ai subdistrict. Troops from the Ranger Control Command under the Third Army Region were deployed after receiving intelligence that narcotics would be moved from a neighbouring country into Thailand through the area.

While patrolling, officers detected a group of five to eight suspects carrying modified sacks used as backpack-style loads and moving on foot. When officers identified themselves and attempted to conduct a search, the suspects opened fire with firearms of unknown type in an apparent attempt to break through and flee.

A firefight ensued for approximately five minutes, after which the gunfire ceased. All officers were reported safe, while the suspects were believed to have retreated towards the border under cover of darkness, prompting authorities to call in reinforcements to secure the area overnight pending further checks.

At about 7.30am on 22 December, officials from the Ranger Control Command and the Pha Muang Task Force’s rapid response unit returned to inspect the scene. Three bodies of suspected traffickers were found at the site, along with three modified backpacks containing a total of 500,000 methamphetamine tablets.

Investigators also recovered a long-barrelled homemade gun with ammunition and six spent 7.62mm cartridge cases, which were seized as evidence. The findings confirmed the scale of the attempted smuggling operation and the exchange of gunfire reported the previous night.

Later at 11.30am, Major General Sathit Waiyannon, commander of the Pha Muang Task Force, assigned Colonel Meechai Nilsart, deputy commander, to lead a multi-agency team to formally inspect the scene and verify the seized drugs. The narcotics and evidence were subsequently handed over to investigators at Mae Ai Police Station for legal proceedings.

Amrin reported that Colonel Meechai said preliminary checks confirmed approximately 500,000 methamphetamine tablets and three fatalities at the scene. He added that the suspect group was believed to comprise five to eight individuals, and that forensic identification of the deceased would be conducted to support further investigation and case expansion.
