A baby gibbon found near a Chiang Mai village was rescued by wildlife officials on December 22 after residents expressed concern for its well-being. The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation reported that officers from Conservation Area Management Office 16 received the gibbon following a tip-off to their forest protection hotline. The young animal was discovered by locals in the Nong Han subdistrict, San Sai district, and showed signs of being separated from its mother.

Officials confirmed that the gibbon, being a juvenile, required professional care. It has been relocated to a controlled nursery environment where specialists are monitoring its health. Authorities will assess the gibbon's condition to plan its rehabilitation, emphasizing the necessity of expert intervention for displaced wildlife.

Wildlife officials urged community members to alert authorities rather than handling wild animals themselves, highlighting the importance of expertise in ensuring the animals' safety. Meanwhile, a separate incident at Chennai Airport in India unfolded, involving the interception of two gibbons smuggled from Bangkok. Found hidden in luggage, the Agile Gibbon and Eastern Grey Gibbon were part of an alleged trafficking network targeting exotic pets.

This discovery marked the second instance of attempted gibbon smuggling into India within two weeks. The endangered animals were promptly returned to Thailand, their immediate welfare prioritized by being sent back on the same Thai Airways flight, reported The Thaiger.
