During the past week, the Department of Health reported a significant number of calls to the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) hotline. From December 21 to 26, 451 calls were logged, with December 23 seeing the highest volume. Most callers were young adults aged 18 to 30 and predominantly female.

The primary reasons for these calls included anxiety and depressive symptoms, followed by relationship and family issues. This pattern reflects ongoing trends, as the NCMH hotline had already received 7,189 suicide-related calls in the first nine months of the year, averaging 798 per month. August and September recorded the highest call volumes, each exceeding 1,000.

Metro Manila, Calabarzon, and Central Luzon are the regions from which most calls originated since 2019. The hotline continues to be a crucial support resource, providing an outlet for those in distress, often needing someone simply to listen.

DOH Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo highlighted the importance of the NCMH’s role in offering mental health support, especially during the emotionally challenging holiday season. The availability of the hotline at 1553 and via mobile numbers offers a much-needed lifeline for individuals in crisis, reported PhilStar.

Key Takeaways

  • 451 mental health calls were made over the Christmas week.
  • Main concerns were anxiety and depressive symptoms.
