The Philippine National Police (PNP) initiated a nationwide crackdown on illegal fireworks ahead of New Year celebrations, aiming to avert accidents and injuries. Police Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., acting PNP chief, instructed local police units and the PNP-Anti-Cyber Crime Group to eliminate prohibited pyrotechnics both on the ground and online. This proactive measure responds to the Department of Health's report of 140 injuries from firecracker blasts.

The drive follows deadly incidents, including two fatalities in a Dagupan City factory explosion and a boy's death in a Tondo firecracker mishap. Nartatez emphasized controlling illegal firecracker sales, with heightened surveillance in areas like Divisoria, notorious for such activity. The initiative involves intercepting large shipments and preventing illegal sales to safeguard public safety.

Experts and authorities express concerns over the aggressive marketing tactics by manufacturers and sellers during this period. Nartatez insisted that vendors defying legal restrictions will face severe consequences to deter such behavior. Public cooperation is sought to report illegal activities, promoting safer festive alternatives for the community.

Looking forward, the PNP will maintain vigilance and enforce strict measures to ensure compliance with safety regulations. Nartatez’s call for public involvement highlights a collaborative approach to mitigating risks associated with the celebrations. Continuous monitoring will aim to further reduce firework-related incidents as the new year unfolds, reported Manila Bulletin.
