The Department of Health (DOH) warns that fireworks-related injuries in the Philippines could rise by over 300 additional cases in the coming days due to delayed reporting. This follows the 235 injuries reported on New Year’s Day. DOH Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo noted that the department’s epidemiology bureau is currently compiling data from 62 monitored hospitals, with an updated report anticipated by January 3.

The initial tally indicates a 42% decrease in injuries compared to last year, but nearly 70% of the victims were children and teenagers. Additionally, some injuries were caused by incidents such as firecracker stalls catching fire, notably injuring 11 people in Antipolo. Local government units also tracked incidents of finger loss due to fireworks, stray bullet injuries, and other holiday-related incidents, primarily in Manila.

Experts express concern about late reports that could alter the current assessment. However, no deaths have been reported, and authorities continue to hope that the overall injury count will remain lower than last year. Domingo advises prompt medical consultation for anyone exposed to fireworks to prevent complications like tetanus, with free vaccines available at government facilities.

Going forward, the DOH and the Philippine National Police will continue to monitor and report injuries related to the festivities. There is an emphasis on improving safety protocols and raising public awareness to minimize risks associated with holiday celebrations, reported PhilStar.

  • Fireworks injuries may increase due to delayed reports, potentially surpassing 300 additional cases.
