A 71-year-old man was killed after being struck by a motorcycle while crossing a main road in Nonthaburi province on the morning of 6 January 2026, causing traffic disruption and prompting a police investigation. The collision occurred near the entrance to Soi Tiwanon 25 in Tha Sai subdistrict, Mueang Nonthaburi district, only 50 metres from a pedestrian footbridge. Emergency responders confirmed the man died at the scene from his injuries.

Police from Rattanathibet Police Station and rescue workers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation were alerted at 9:10am and rushed to the location. Officers coordinated with an on-duty forensic doctor from the Institute of Forensic Science to conduct a preliminary examination. The area was secured to allow for evidence collection and documentation of the crash site.

The deceased was identified as Mr Rattakit Patmapongsombat, aged 71, whose body was found lying in the middle of the road. Nearby, officers found a blue Honda PCX motorcycle with Bangkok registration number, showing front-end damage and bloodstains. The rider, Mr Chayawin, aged 16, sustained injuries and was taken by rescue workers to Phra Nang Klao Hospital for treatment.

Relatives of the victim later arrived at the scene and told police that Mr Rattakit had been travelling to visit his older sister in the Tao Poon area. They said they were unsure how he had reached the exact location where the collision occurred. Investigators noted that the crossing point was close to a footbridge, which may be relevant to the inquiry.

According to Mr Chayawin’s statement to police, he was riding when he suddenly saw the elderly man crossing from the central median on the right side of the road towards the left. He said the man appeared unsteady and that he attempted to swerve to avoid him, believing at the time that he had only lost control and fallen. Mr Chayawin added that a pickup truck was also nearby and he was uncertain whether the man might have been clipped by the truck before the motorcycle collision.

Police said they have photographed the scene and recorded physical evidence as part of the case file. Officers will summon the motorcycle rider for further questioning once his condition allows. CCTV footage from nearby cameras will also be reviewed to determine the exact sequence of events and whether another vehicle was involved.

Koaded reported that the body of Mr Rattakit was released to the Ruamkatanyu Foundation and transported to the Institute of Forensic Science for a full post-mortem examination. Authorities said the investigation will continue until the precise cause of death and responsibility for the collision are confirmed.

Yes, pedestrian bridges are a nice idea, but they are a disaster for older people who have to walk up and down those stairs, especially in the intense heat that is often present.
