Protests in Iran have intensified, leaving at least 29 dead and over 1,200 detained, amid public outcry against economic hardships. The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported these figures as demonstrations continued to sweep the nation over nine days.

Dissatisfaction began in late December with rallies in Tehran opposing inflation and the declining value of the rial. Protests quickly spread, demanding governmental change and chanting slogans like “death to the Islamic Republic.” In response, security forces reportedly used tear gas and live ammunition, while the government downplayed these actions as measures against "rioters."

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian acknowledged economic concerns, stating reforms in the monetary and banking systems were underway. He urged dialogue with protesters to address valid grievances. Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also agreed on engagement but warned of punitive actions against perceived instigators, alleging foreign influence without providing evidence.

The government has withheld its statistics, but HRANA states the death toll is 35, including four children and two security personnel. Khamenei claims foreign powers, such as Israel and the U.S., are encouraging unrest that destabilises Iran's economy. reported ABC News.

Key Takeaways:

  • Protests in Iran have resulted in 29 deaths and over 1,200 arrests.

  • Economic grievances are central, with rising anti-government sentiment.

  • Leaders blame external influences while striving for dialogue with genuine protesters.
