A trailer truck carrying sugarcane caught fire in Sa Kaeo province after hitting overhead power lines, leaving one man injured and causing extensive damage to the vehicle. The incident occurred in the Ta Lang Nai subdistrict of Wang Nam Yen district and lasted from the early evening until close to midnight on 8 January 2026, as emergency crews worked to extinguish the blaze. The fire resulted in significant disruption and required assistance from multiple local authorities.

According to reports the incident took place outside Wat Khao Sarika when the sugarcane trailer struck power cables crossing the road, causing them to snap. The contact triggered an electrical short circuit, which ignited the load of sugarcane and quickly set the vehicle alight. A 29-year-old man who was riding at the rear of the truck sustained burn injuries to his head, torso and limbs, as a result of the fire.

Rescue personnel from the Sawang Sa Kaeo Rescue Foundation, led by Mr Witmon Boonla, head of the Wang Nam Yen unit, were dispatched to the scene after receiving the emergency call. Paramedics provided first aid to the injured man before transferring him urgently to Wang Nam Yen Hospital for treatment. Authorities later confirmed that his condition was stable and he was out of immediate danger.

Firefighting efforts proved challenging due to seasonal conditions and the nature of the cargo. This period marks the peak sugarcane harvest, with large volumes being transported to processing plants and the sugarcane is very flammable form of biomass fuel. Strong winds further intensified the fire, allowing flames to spread rapidly across the vehicle.

Fire crews were initially only able to prevent the flames from spreading beyond the immediate area. Additional fire engines were dispatched from the Ta Lang Nai Subdistrict Administrative Organisation and Wang Nam Yen Municipality to reinforce the response. A backhoe was also brought in to remove and spread out the burning sugarcane from the trailer, allowing firefighters to douse the fire more effectively.

Kaoded reported that despite these efforts, the blaze caused severe damage, leaving the vehicle almost completely destroyed. Firefighters worked for several hours, with the situation only brought under control close to midnight. No further injuries were reported.

As a well know actor once said "you're only supposed to burn the bloody fields"

A daily occurrence here. Our power is down as I write this. These bloody idiots and their "OBVIOUSLY" overloaded trucks are a danger to all.

I hope the injured man recovers soon after being hit buy the hay, but he is in a 'stable' condition......
