A late-night pickup truck crash in Pattaya on January 11 led to the toppling of three high-voltage power poles on Soi Paniad Chang, resulting in live wires strewn across the road. The accident prompted police to close the area to prevent any risk of electric shock. Traffic was disrupted as emergency responders worked through the night to clear the scene.

The crash took place at 10:36 PM in Bang Lamung district, Chon Buri. Police and rescue teams were alerted to a vehicle collision with a power pole. Upon arrival, they found that three power poles had been brought down, with live wires dangerously hanging and a directional sign damaged. A bronze Toyota pickup was under the wreckage, driven by a 57-year-old Thai man who appeared disoriented but unharmed.

According to the driver, the crash occurred when he swerved to avoid another vehicle and lost control. A 21-year-old witness, a delivery rider, reported seeing the pickup speeding before it lost control at a curve, causing the crash. Authorities conducted a breathalyser test on the driver and are analyzing CCTV footage to clarify the incident's cause.

Traffic disruptions persisted as officials worked to remove the debris and restore road safety. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported, avoiding further casualties from the incident. This event is reminiscent of a similar accident last December when a Lamborghini hit a power pole near Bang Rak Noi Tha It MRT station in Nonthaburi, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • A pickup crash in Pattaya toppled three power poles, closing a road due to safety concerns.

  • Authorities conducted investigations, checking CCTV and testing the driver for alcohol influence.

  • No other injuries were reported despite live wires on the road, averting further danger.

This crash caused an inordinate amount of work for the PEA and a huge amount of inconvenience for the public.

The road had to be closed for hours. Electricity was cut for hours. The internet was down even longer. The number of workers to put in new poles, re-hang wires, check everything was working was huge. They were still at it 20 hours after the accident.

It was incredible that so many people and so much equipment could be sprung into action with no prior notice. Well done the PEA. If the driver was drunk and/or driving recklessly, I hope there are very real consequences.
