A Hero’s Journey to Juno Beach

Don Butt was only 17 when he joined the Royal Marines. Just a year later, he found himself in the first wave of the Normandy landings at Juno Beach. As a landing craft crew member, Don faced a barrage of bombs and bullets while helping troops reach the shore. Despite the "carnage of war" surrounding him, Don completed multiple trips back and forth to ensure the success of the liberation.

For years, Don remained humble and silent about his service. He lived under the mistaken belief that he wasn't entitled to a medal because he was "too young" at the time of the invasion. It wasn't until he recently opened up to his family and a fellow marine that the process to secure his recognition began.

A Race Against Time

The journey to the award wasn't easy. An initial application in 2024 was rejected, leading to a "race against time" as Don celebrated his 100th birthday. However, with help from the Royal Marines Historical Society and the Ministry of Defence, the French authorities fast-tracked a second application.

Last week, the Royal Marines presented Don with the insignia of Chevalier in the Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur. In a letter, Hélène Duchêne, the French Ambassador to the UK, thanked Don for his military engagement, stating that Europe owes its freedom to heroes like him.

Don, now residing in a care home in Somerset, expressed that his "worries have all gone." With this final honor, he feels his life’s service is finally complete.

Key Takeaways

A Lifelong Dream: At 100 years old, Don Butt received France’s highest honor, the Légion d’honneur, for his role in the D-Day invasion.

Brave Service: Don served in the first wave at Juno Beach at just 18 years old, later clocking over 42,000 miles at sea during WWII.

Historic Recognition: The award was fast-tracked by French authorities to ensure the veteran was recognized for his heroism during his lifetime.
