An 87-year-old monk attempted to raise the alarm after a thief stole from a donation box at Wat Nok temple in Chonburi province early Tuesday. The suspect managed to flee with the cash before being caught. Police responded to the incident at 04:30 on January 20, 2026, where Phra Baidika Thawi Phromchoto and others were present near the damaged pavilion.

The newly-installed steel donation box, intended for worshipper contributions and temple expenses, had been put in place just the day before. The suspect used a metal tool to break open the box and steal the money. Despite Phra Thawi's efforts to alert nearby residents, the thief escaped before anyone could intervene.

Phra Thawi urged the thief to reconsider targeting temples, emphasizing the sacred intent behind donations. In response to the theft, police have begun reviewing CCTV footage from the temple and surrounding areas to identify and apprehend the suspect.

Authorities are committed to ensuring those responsible face legal consequences. The incident raises concerns about security for religious institutions and the sanctity of donation practices, reported Khaosod.
