Motorists using the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) face higher tolls as a new rate adjustment is implemented today. NLEX Corp. announced the Toll Regulatory Board's authorization for a P6 hike for the open system and P0.26 per kilometer increase for the closed system. This marks the second and final tranche of planned toll rate adjustments originally scheduled for 2023.

The toll adjustments were initially delayed by the board, opting for a phased implementation to lessen impact on drivers. The new rates mean Class 1 vehicles, such as cars and SUVs, will see a P6 increase within the open system. For Class 2, including buses and small trucks, the hike is P12, while Class 3 vehicles face a P16 increase.

The open system stretches from Navotas, Valenzuela, and Caloocan in Metro Manila to Marilao in Bulacan. Meanwhile, the closed system spans Bocaue in Bulacan to Sta. Ines in Mabalacat, Pampanga, including the Subic-Tipo portion. Full-length trips from Metro Manila to Mabalacat will now cost an extra P24 for Class 1, P60 for Class 2, and P72 for Class 3 vehicles.

NLEX Corp. emphasized that these periodic toll adjustments are vital for maintaining safety, efficiency, and quality service on the expressway. Experts and stakeholders have noted the balance between necessary infrastructure funding and the financial impact on regular commuters. Regular users are advised to adjust travel budgets accordingly and explore alternative routes if feasible.

Going forward, the focus will likely be on monitoring the effects of this adjustment on traffic flow and commuter satisfaction. The next step involves assessing whether further adjustments are needed in future years to sustain infrastructure and service quality, reported Philstar.

Key Takeaways

  • NLEX toll rates rise as final adjustment phase begins.

  • Delayed implementation aimed to minimize user impact.

  • Adjustments crucial for service quality upkeep.
