January 28Jan 28 Myanmar’s military regime has reassigned two of its most senior Air Force officers to ambassadorial roles in China and Russia, a move analysts say is designed to neutralise potential rivals as the junta prepares to unveil a new government.Lt-Gen. Zaw Win Myint, formerly Air Force chief of staff, was named ambassador to Beijing earlier this month, while Lt-Gen. Myo Moe Aung, ex-head of the Air Defense Forces and nephew of former junta strongman Maung Aye, has been dispatched to Moscow. Both countries are key allies and major suppliers of arms to Myanmar.Military insiders suggest the appointments amount to a purge. Zaw Win Myint, once tipped for the top Air Force post, was known for his loyalty to subordinates and reluctance to punish pilots under pressure from the Army. His popularity among the ranks is believed to have unsettled junta leader Min Aung Hlaing, who prefers to promote unquestioning loyalists. His seniority also posed a challenge to Min Aung Hlaing’s favoured candidate for future Commander-in-Chief, Gen Kyaw Swar Lin.Myo Moe Aung, meanwhile, enjoyed a glittering career but was dogged by allegations of links to the Karen Border Guard Force and its lucrative online fraud hubs at Shwe Kokko. Despite reprimands, his family connections shielded him from serious consequences. Analysts say his transfer to Russia reflects both reputational concerns and a desire to keep him out of domestic politics.Traditionally, Myanmar has appointed brigadier generals as ambassadors. The decision to send lieutenant generals to key allies marks a significant departure, signalling that trusted but potentially troublesome figures are being removed from the domestic chain of command under the guise of diplomacy.Observers argue the reshuffle underscores Min Aung Hlaing’s determination to consolidate power ahead of the new government expected in March. By sidelining officers with strong followings or controversial ties, the junta chief is tightening his grip on the military hierarchy while ensuring that strategic partners China and Russia remain closely engaged.-2026-11-28 ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français ThaiVisa, it's also in French
