Tourist police on Koh Phangan have dismantled a transnational cocaine trafficking ring, arresting a Canadian man, a Nigerian national and his Thai wife in a coordinated operation spanning two days. The arrests followed intensified checks on foreign nationals in tourist areas, ordered by Pol Lt Gen Saksira Pueak-am, Commissioner of the Tourist Police Bureau.

The operation began at 9.30pm on 26 January, when officers stopped a suspicious motorcyclist in Ban Tai subdistrict. The rider, identified as Mr Kanan, 40, a Canadian national, was wearing black clothing and concealing his face.

A search uncovered two packets of cocaine hidden inside a stainless steel container sewn into his sleeve. Officers also found equipment for consuming crystal methamphetamine in his room, and phone evidence showed a drug delivery had been arranged at the arrest location.

Police expanded the investigation after Mr Kanan admitted he had obtained the drugs from an agent using the alias “Maria KPG”. Officers then arranged a controlled purchase of two grams of cocaine to identify the suppliers.

On the morning of 27 January, police arrested a 43-year-old Nigerian man named John and his Thai wife, Mintra, outside a laundrette. Cocaine wrapped in black tape was found hidden under the carpet of a Toyota Yaris used by the suspects.

During questioning, Ms Mintra told police that her husband had no regular job and typically delivered drugs to tourist customers at night. She said he closely followed news reports of previous arrests of Nigerian suspects to study police methods and try to avoid detection.

Investigators said the couple were linked to a wider network connected to a man named Ugowma, who was arrested in mid-January. Police described the case as the result of in-depth investigative work that traced connections across multiple suspects.

The arrests form part of a broader directive to tighten enforcement against foreign nationals involved in illegal activity in popular tourist destinations. Tourist police on Koh Phangan have been instructed to maintain heightened scrutiny to prevent drug trafficking networks from operating on the island.

Naewna reported that all three suspects are being processed under Thai narcotics laws, and further investigations are ongoing to identify additional members of the network. Authorities said more arrests could follow as evidence from seized phones and vehicles is analysed.

Key Takeaways

• Tourist police arrested three suspects linked to a transnational cocaine network on Koh Phangan.

• The operation followed surveillance, a controlled drug purchase, and links to a previously arrested suspect.

• Authorities say intensified checks on foreign nationals in tourist areas will continue.
