Karen and Mark Chanloung will represent Thailand at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, marking their third consecutive appearance at the Winter Games and a return to the country where they were raised. Born and trained in Italy, the siblings are expected to carry Thailand’s flag at the opening ceremony on 6 February, highlighting the nation’s small but growing presence in winter sports.

The cross-country skiers, aged 29 and 30 respectively, grew up in Gressoney-La-Trinité in Italy’s Aosta Valley, where skiing is part of daily life. Born to an Italian mother and a Thai father, they developed through Italy’s competitive regional system and initially raced for Italy before switching allegiance to Thailand in 2016. Their decision combined practical opportunity with a personal desire to represent their father’s country and help establish a national winter sports programme.

Both athletes have previously competed for Thailand at the 2018 Pyeongchang and 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. The Milano Cortina Games will therefore complete a full circle, returning them to familiar venues and landscapes. Karen said the event would be especially meaningful because it is being held in Italy, adding that her grandmother, Ada, will attend to support them.

The cross-country events will take place in Tesero, Val di Fiemme, where Karen competed during her junior years. Mark is expected to enter several endurance events, while Karen will focus on the women’s 10km race. Their family remains closely involved, with their father, Boonchan Chanloung, acting as team manager and technical leader and their mother, Maria Vittoria Comune, working as a physiotherapist during major competitions.

Switching to represent Thailand meant fewer resources than those available in established European programmes. However, their Olympic appearances have helped raise awareness and interest in winter sports back home. Since 2018, Thai sports authorities have invested in roller-skiing initiatives, using asphalt routes and purpose-built circuits to introduce endurance skiing disciplines to young athletes.

Progress was further highlighted in 2024 when Thailand won its first Winter Youth Olympic medal, a silver in women’s monobob at the Gangwon Games. Mark has since taken on a mentoring role, advising younger Thai athletes on technique and equipment while continuing to compete internationally.

Khoasod reported that both siblings see the Milano Cortina Games as another step in building Thailand’s long-term winter sports capability. Mark said the national federation remains young and its athletes often start from very basic levels, but added that Thailand is among the most organised of the so-called exotic winter sports nations and is moving in the right direction.

Key Takeaways

• Karen and Mark Chanloung will compete for Thailand at their third Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina 2026.

• The siblings were raised and trained in Italy before switching allegiance to Thailand in 2016.

• Thailand has expanded winter sports development since 2018, including earning its first Winter Youth Olympic medal in 2024.

The second Liza's... Born from a THai person, grown up and educated in Italy.. No effort for THailand at all, but now it is a part of Thailand to show how good it is... Same in tourists sector.. The Vietnam war brought THailand the tourists.. Did not need to do anything for it...

No need to be so negative.

Unlikely they will challenge seriously but anything to promote the potential idea is a positive in my view.

Although I do confess my first thought was Eddie the Eagle........giggle

The Jamaica bobsled team got a movie also. Great with John Candy

Unfortunately Thai Ice hockey team didn't qualify for the Olympics.... Again...fifty-first in the IIHF World Rankings

But our hockey team beat India and Bahrain 29-0 in 2011

There's a lot of this dual nationality having an effect on sport in this region.

Just look at the Japan national rugby team.

Now, you have South East Asian countries fast tracking elite overseas soccer players to citizenship, so they can play for their national team.

I have no problem with dual nationality, but when it comes to sport, perhaps global governing bodies should have the rule that the player can only play for the country where they came through juniors, or similar.

What does this mean, "I'm both in the reserves of two country as "special?"
