An American master’s student has been sentenced to life in prison for the "savage" murder of a fellow student at Goldsmiths, University of London. Joshua Michals, 26, was handed a minimum term of 16 years on Friday for the 2024 killing of 31-year-old Zhe Wang.

A Deadly Dispute Over Health Concerns

The tragic incident occurred in March 2024 at Wang’s flat in Manor Park, Lewisham. The court heard that the pair, who met while studying at the prestigious London university, were involved in a casual relationship. Tension escalated after Wang, described as being highly concerned with hygiene, became convinced she had contracted a sexually transmitted disease (STD) following a sexual encounter with Michals.

While Wang repeatedly urged Michals to undergo medical testing, he refused. Prosecutors stated that Michals eventually traveled to Wang’s home to "calm her down," but the encounter turned fatal. During a 50-minute window, Michals attacked Wang, delivering two stab wounds to her face and strangling her before fleeing the scene.

Sentencing at the Old Bailey

Judge Richard Marks, presiding over the case at London’s Old Bailey, rejected Michals’ claims of self-defense. Michals had argued that Wang attacked him with a knife first, but the judge ruled that he had "lost complete control" in a fit of rage.

Wang, a talented creative writing student from China, was remembered by her family and peers as a "gentle" and "joyful" person who had moved to the UK to pursue her lifelong dream of studying languages. Her work is set to be published posthumously by the university. Michals, originally from Chicago, will now serve at least 16 years before being eligible for parole.

Key Takeaways

  • Life Sentence Issued: American student Joshua Michals received a life sentence with a 16-year minimum for the murder of Zhe Wang.

  • Tragic Motive: The killing followed a heated dispute regarding Wang's concerns over a potential STD and Michals’ refusal to get tested.

  • Brutal Attack: The court heard that the victim was both stabbed and strangled in her London home during a "fury" of violence.
