Musk says steps to stop Russia from using Starlink seem to have worked

Feb 1 (Reuters) - Elon Musk said on Sunday that moves by his SpaceX company to stop the 'unauthorized' use by Russia of its internet system Starlink seemed to have worked, ‌while Kyiv's defence chief said officials were working on ways to prevent any ‌future use by Moscow.

Kyiv's military relies on tens of thousands of satellite-based Starlink internet connections for battlefield communication and for piloting some drone missions, but said this week it had found Starlink terminals on long-range drones used in ‌Russian attacks.

Ukraine said it was working with SpaceX to stop Russia from guiding drones with Starlink.

"Looks like the ‍steps we took to stop the unauthorized use of Starlink by Russia have worked. Let us know if more needs to be done," SpaceX CEO Musk said on X.

Melanie Garson, associate professor of international security at University College London, told The Cube that available evidence suggests Moscow is acquiring Starlink through illicit means, either through allies supplying them, capturing them in the field, or buying them on secondary or shadow markets.

Victoria Samson, a space security analyst at the Secure World Foundation said SpaceX can limit Starlink coverage through geofencing, which allows the system to operate only in defined regions. However, this is difficult in an active frontline, where the line keeps "moving back and forth" and risks disrupting Ukrainian Starlink use.

Ultimately, there is no evidence that Elon Musk or SpaceX have directly supplied Starlink services to Russian forces.

Russia threatening and blackmailing relatives of POW’s to get Starlink access

According to a statement from Ukraine’s state body responsible for prisoners of war, Russian forces contacted relatives of captured Ukrainian servicemen and coerced them into registering Starlink satellite terminals in their own names.

“Looking for a way out of the difficult situation they are in, the occupiers have contacted families of prisoners of war. We have received information about cases of threats and requests for them (relatives of prisoners of war) to officially register Starlink terminals in their names. The technology was then to be used against Ukraine and Ukrainians,” the agency said.
