The Pollution Control Department (PCD) has warned the public not to approach shipping containers carrying hazardous substances from the cargo vessel SEALLOYD ARC, which sank off Phuket. The advisory follows reports that containers have surfaced and drifted after the ship went down. Officials have issued safety recommendations to protect residents and tourists.

On 11 February 2026, Surin Worakittharom, Director-General of the PCD, signed an official announcement outlining guidance for anyone who encounters containers believed to be from the Panama-flagged vessel. The SEALLOYD ARC, a dry cargo/container ship, sank on 7 February 2026 at 3.30pm. The incident occurred southwest of Koh Kaew Noi, Phuket province, at a depth of 61 metres.

The vessel measured 4,339 gross tonnes, 113 metres in length and 16 metres in width. It was carrying 297 containers at the time of the sinking. The wreck lies at latitude 7° 43.88″ North and longitude 98° 16.62″ East, on a seabed described as sandy mud, with the ship resting at a slight angle.

Following the sinking, a number of containers reportedly floated and dispersed around the wreck site. Authorities are concerned that some contain hazardous materials. The PCD announcement was issued under Section 32 of the State Administration Act B.E. 2534 (1991) and its amendments.

The department has instructed the public to keep at least 50 metres away from any suspicious container found on beaches or at sea. Members of the public, tourists and unauthorised persons are strictly prohibited from approaching them. People are also warned not to open any container, particularly those displaying hazard symbols.

The guidance further advises against touching any leaked liquids, oil residues or chemical substances, as they may be corrosive or capable of being absorbed through the skin. Smoking, creating sparks, or using open flames near the area is prohibited due to the risk of highly flammable chemicals. The use of engines in areas where chemical odours are detected should also be avoided.

Members of the public who encounter containers are asked to take photographs, including any hazard labels and the location, and report the sighting. Relevant hotlines are 1650 (Pollution Control Department), 1196 (Marine Department) and 1465 (Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Centre).

Khoasod reported that authorities have not released further details on the specific hazardous substances involved. Monitoring and response efforts are expected to continue as officials track and secure the drifting containers.
